    2-pass encoding

As I understand, in the first pass of a 2-pass encoding using mencoder the output avi file is not used in any way--only file 'divx2pass.log' is used by the second pass. So if I set the output of the first pass to '-o NUL' for Windows or '-o /dev/null' for *nix, will this speed up the encoding a bit and extend the life of hard drive a bit:D?

Your harddrive won't be saved much by that. :P It should safe up on HDD write's though, so it's good to use /dev/null.
