Because for some reason the player would show it 'sideways'
It could be some technical stuff relating to player.

All video must be 90 degrees in order to see it display correctly

No, it wouldn't show that video wrong.
The tft panels in the Meizu players were originally designed for use in PDAs in portrait mode (240x320). If you want to see a normal landscape movie that is 320x240, the Meizu has to recalculate each picture and turn it by 90 degrees. This step takes away a lot of performance. If you use a software that turns the video to 240x320, the cpu of the Meizu does not need to rotate it by itself, and the performance is much better.

Also I noticed that a rotated video can have more Frames Per Second. I encode at 20 now where as before I did 15 (for non rotated video).

My unit plays portrait mode if I don't rotate it and not landscape.

It's an affirmation or a question?...
If you don't rotate it will show a warning or an error and wont play.
Don't get confused, if you use bundled converter it won't ask you to rotate... it will do it internally.
