vista and xp conversion speed

i've found windows vista to be be almost twice as fast as windows xp
when converting divx-avis (720x576, 25 fps, 1600kbps) to
xvid-avis (320x240, 18 fps, 480 kbps) with virtualdub 1.7.1.
videos play perfectly well (so far i've not found any file
with audio-video-sync problems on the m6).

the reason of the improvement

I wonder what could be the reason of the improvement. As far as I know Vista doesn't bring any optimizations for video encoding.

i use virtualdub 1.7.1 exclusively with divx 6.5 or xvid.
simply don't know the reason for this substantial speed increase (cpu intel c2d e6400@2.9 GHz, 2 GB ram, dualboot vista or xp). nonetheless, the vista gui
needs some time to get used to so i do only overnight batch conversion in vista but everyday work in xp.

no, vista ultimate 32-bit and xp 32-bit.
i have a few numbers that speak for themselves:
conversion of 110 minutes movie (star trek 2) from
divx-avi (720x576, 25 fps) to divx-avi (320x240, 20fps)
took 10:20 minutes under vista but 17:30 minutes under xp!

here are screenshots with settings that work perfectly
with my m6.

for divx i use:
unconstrained profile,
single pass 450 kbps
balanced encoding method
bidirectional encoding is off.

for audio i use direct stream copy as it is already mp3.
