Is there something I'm missing?
I've installed DFU Tools, I've got my M6 and a USB cable. I've repeatedly tried to connect it by holding down the power and M buttons and plugging it in, but still, nothing. The first few tries, the screen flickered, but I haven't had any response on either of the two computers I've tried it on. I'm starting to think this is a lost cause...

Hi, I'm pretty sure I read on here the using DFU can take a few tries.

Maybe a few tries, but this is ridiculous... I'm sure I've tried the thing over 50 times.

I've tried all the slots on both computers, and changing the drivers doesn't really help when the computer won't recognize the device. Thanks, though.

Have you tried going into Windows device manager and deleting the DFU entry (it's at the bottom in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers). When I used this tool Windows did not allow the driver to be installed because it was not signed so although installed it was never going to work.
If this is your problem then you will need to right click on MY COMPUTER icon in the start menu, this will display a menu - select the bottom entry PROPERTIES, you will now have the System Properties window open - select the tab HARDWARE, near the middle you will see a button marked DRIVER SIGNING - click on it, from the pop up window DRIVER SIGNING PROPERTIES select either the top or middle option. ( It is safe to allow this driver but you may want to reset this after the installation )
This will now allow you to start fresh and do a clean install of the driver when prompted.
I have found the DFU tool straight forward to use and it worked first time - start the tool before you connect the player and you will be able to see it recognising your connection.
I hope this helps you get your miniPlayer back :-)

The DFU tool is a standalone program and is not a program to get your computer to recognize the player. It is used to reinstall the firmware when your computer will NOT recognize the player. AFTER the firmware is installed on your player using the DFU tool, your computer will then recognize the player.

You'll know when the DFU tool recognizes the player, because the DOWNLOAD button will become active. If the DFU tool isn't recognizing the player, then you will need to uninstall, and reinstall the program.
It is a very simple and straightforward tool that can take multiple passes to successfully reinstall the firmware correctly.

Okay, now the computer recognized it. I've installed the DFU driver, but the download box in the program is still grayed out.
Edit: I've tried downloading, but it always gives the error "Failed to communicate with DFU device."Last edited by generalnonsense; 09-18-2007 at 04:38 AM.

Hi Generalnonsense,
does this mean that you have made some progress?
Does your computer now recognise the connection of the player and the download button is not greyed out?
Do you have your firmware in the same directory as the DFU tool?
After you were able to download the firmware using the DFU tool but received an error message, did you try connecting the player to the USB cable as normal to see if Windows recognised the player as a mass storage device, if so you can just place the proper version of the firmware in the root directory of the player.

This is correct. If the computer can recognize the player, there is no need to use the DFU tool, just drag and drop the firmware files into the root directory, and you should be good to go.
If the computer doesn't recognize the player, and the DFU tool does not allow you to download, you will have to reinstall the DFU tool. I've had this happen before, and after reinstalling the program, it worked perfectly.

Unfortunately, it is not recognized as a mass storage device yet, just a DFU server. I'm going to try reinstalling DFU Tools to see if it'll work then.
Edit: After reinstalling a few times, I got the firmware to download, and then disconnected the player. I started it up, and it's now giving me a screen that says "Formatting, please wait..." It's been sitting like this for several minutes now.
Edit 2: I connected it with my computer with it still displaying this, and it was recognized as a mass storage device a couple minutes after being plugged in. Now, whenever I try to access it via My Computer, the window freezes.Last edited by generalnonsense; 09-20-2007 at 01:30 AM.

WHY??
You managed to get it to the second last stage, the yellow/green screen where it told you it was formatting but you never let it finish!
If you had left it until it finished formatting it would have switched off and the when you switched it back on you would have seen a message on the screen informing you that the resource file was damaged or missing. At this stage you would have connected it up to your computer and copied the resource file to the root.
Had you reached this final stage it would have been just a case of switching it off then back on and you would have had a working mini player.

Neh... I waited 2 or 3 minutes, assumed nothing was going to happen, and connected it. I'll just use DFU Tools again, I guess...

Ugh... this is very discouraging. I've run DFU Tools again, and it's sitting in the yellow loading screen after I turned it back on. To do that, I had to hold down the enter button after using DFU Tools. It's been sitting like this for about 20 minutes...
