It plays them but then the player freezes up after playing it.

It does not free up. Make sure you have the newest firmware. It takes 2 'back' buttons to get back to the menu. One press stops the gif, 2nd one gets u back to the menu.

yes it does freeze up with the latest firmware, i've checked a gif file animation (300kb)
