For a hard reset you have to do this:

Press and hold the ON/OFF and the “>>|” buttons together and until player turns OFF itself. All data will be lost.

I actually think this might be a firmware update problem.

Perhaps you should try connecting to the computer and correctly updating to the latest firmware.
