    The FAQ has a section on serial numbers here. My guess is that if it has a valid serial number, then it is real.

    I also saw the pictures and I don't think it's fake. The casing details and the printing on the back are very well executed to me. Usually the fakes can't resist a good visual inspection.

    About your problems with memory and video, have you tried formatting the memory or upgrading the firmware?

    Well, since yours appear to be Dane-Elec version, you have to:
    1. Download the firmware from Dane-Elec's website;
    2. Unzip the files to some folder in your PC (can be the Desktop as well) -- you'll get two files: M6.EBN and resource.bin;
    3. Make sure the battery has enough charge to keep the M6 turned on;
    4. Make sure that your M6 has USB mode set to "MSC";
    5. Plug your M6 to USB port;
    6. It will appear as a USB Mass Storage Device, and will be assigned a drive letter;
    7. Copy the two files you unzipped in the 2nd step to the upmost folder of the assigned drive, or "root" folder -- I say "root" inside quotes since there's no folder named ROOT in the player;
    8. Left-click the green icon for the USB device in the task bar and select "Safely remove device...";
    9. Unplug your player from the USB and turn it off;
    10. Turn it on again;
    11. You'll see a black screen with a white box saying "Updating firmware... please wait..." or something similar. After that the player should turn off by itself;
    12. Turn the M6 on again;
    13. You should see a message like "Upgrading resource... Please wait...", and after that it's done and you'll be in the "Now Playing" screen.
    If there's some kind of problem while upgrading the resource file, you'll have to perform the steps starting at 5, but only copying resource.bin file at step 7. It should then update the resource file.
