rockbox is also a great custom firmware, but it seems like there is no-one who is capable of making it wants to do it, i am also hoping someone will come forward and make rockbox or linux work on the m6.

Rockbox is Linux. There are several documents and tools how to start developement for a new player. It takes some time to find them all on the rockbox page. So, let's slow down and read that stuff first.

The critical point is the bootloader, which let you choose between original FW and rockbox. If you build a bootloader and it doesn't work, than you got a problem. I don't know how to get back to virgine state.

It's not a good idea to ask rockbox developers for a new port. It's explicitely writen on their page NOT TO DO THAT. They may help you after you startet your own project and you got a special question.

If some guys got guts and want to risk to break their player by a bad bootloader, than we could start developement. I got the tools, but at the moment I don't risk to break my player, because there is still warranty.

you might be able to recover by using DFU tools perhaps, or not?

If we would know, it would be a big step into save developement. Feel free to do research at that point.

i suggest that we find some players with 1GB, or even smaller (=cheaper) if these exist, and try it on those, i have a 8GB version wich cost me a lot, so i'm not going to try with mine...
anyway, there will also be a difference between TP SP and SL versions, since it has other hardware i think there need to be made 3 different loaders for it to work...

Even a bricked 1GB player would be too expensive, as you'd probably also brick the next few ones until you get it right ...
So what is really needed is a safe recovery procedure, or some research on the DFU part.
If it can recover M6 from flashing wrong firmware (e.g. TP on an SP model), it seems likely it could also recover from a bad rockbox boot loader - but noone has ever done this and there seems to be no definitive statement, so it remains risky.

IMHO, the existing firmware still isn't bad enough to take that risk
Of course, if someone came up with a safe and proven way to recover from a bad flash, or some datasheets, things might get rolling...

hey, there is just some news released on a custom firmware running on linux, you can find more info about it on this forum:
    http://www.meizume.com/miniplayer-m6...inese-bbs.html
i have no idea how to install it, so i can not test it until there are some clear instructions...

i hope you find this interesting, i certainly do!
