People will always try that.

Writing the software: x people for x months. They want their salary, too. So with every sold piece of hardware you will pay for the salary of the software developers, too.
If a company doesn't have to pay for the software they can build the same player and can sell it for less money. So the first company which developed the software will not sell their players anymore because they can't offer the same price because there are more people who want to get their salary.
Offcourse they will get their salary. Did you actually read my post? Making a complete rip-off of the player is illegal. It won't happen. Next to that, there already are a lot of M6 rip-offs in China, but even with all those rip-offs Meizu is very popular. The same counts for, for example iPod rip-offs. A rip-off will never be as popular as the original.

Yeah, for sure. Try selling an mp3player without software. Only the hardware but no mp3 playback. Good luck!
Again, did you read my post? Your reply has nothing to do with the quotation you put above it. I never implies anything about a firmwareless player. Offcourse a firmwareless player is worthless. I said that when the firmware is open it's a big plus for certain buyers. Just look at the popularity of Rockbox and iPodLinux.

Although hardware rip-offs may be illegal in China, too, I bet people will do it anyway. It's not that hard, put together some chips and put a case around. A mp3player is not that difficult as it uses standardized chips.

Although projects like rockbox are very popular (at least in your point of view) you will need a firmware for the player in the beginning (as far as I understand the procedure). You will have to pay the software developers for this work. If a second company "steals" this firmware (because it fits without modifying on "their" players), they can sell their players cheaper than the first company and therefore the first company will not sell as much players as it would be possible.

Please, get me right: I like open software especially for more simple things like mp3players but I can understand every company, which does not want to make their software/firmware/whatsoever open.

As I said: They already do. And they are not even near the popularity of the original product.

Again: It won't happen. You might overestimate the amount of costs for firmware development, a lot comes from open-source projects already, the M6 uses SoX for audio decoding for example. The firmware will never work on another player unmodified. Most of the firmware is written in assembler for speed and power consumption sakes, assembler is bound to the exact hardware. It's difficult to understand assembler to get individual pieces out of it. You would still need a very good engineer for that. But it is possible to reverse engineer it enough to create new code to drive the hardware.

Also, when the license is the GPL (like Rockbox and Linux), derivative code must bear the same license. Thus, everybody benefits.

Sorry for the misunderstood, I didn't want to ask a real question... I agree with your opinion, I wanted to say that if it would be such simple, their will exist lot's of open firmware throught the world... In my own opinion, their is two ends with open firmware : the company make lots of money due to many sells... Or it closes its doors... That's a big deal, and I perfectly understand why companies don't want to open their firmwares... But that's so sad

it would be awesome to have an open firmware happening. has anything like this been attempted at all? When i looked into in over a year ago meizu were very against the idea, and like audifish has said, i've never been able to find any data on the m6's chips..
