ipod touch 2g - To cross to the dark side.

After listening to the sound these players give and playing around with the functionality, I'm really wanting one. The battery life has been increased over the first generation of touches and the sound quality improved.

There was also a price drop as well

Should i convert to an apple product? (For the first time, I actually thought this ipod sounded good and the pricing wasn't that harsh)

I never thought it would happen but I have just gone over to the dark side with a 32GB 2G Touch, sold my 16GB D2 and my 4GB D2 is just collecting dust. Pair nicely with the SA6 as well, currently waiting for a LOD arrival to see if amping will take it up another level but I am finding the HO as clean as the D2 through the Minibox-E+ no hiss or distortion.

Loving the wi-fi and apps and even the dreaded iTunes installed and integrated my music library without a single drama.

Also picked up the Griffin SmartTalk that works as a cabled remote so I can Play\Pause - Next\Prev without going near the touch screen and it also lets me make skype voice calls using the free Fring app if there is wi-fi handy.

If you take the plunge I recommend the BSE (Best Skin Ever) for under $10 it gives full body protection without chunking up the sleek design.

I will go now before I am stoned......

lol! Nah i'm sure your ipod touch will protect you from the stones Stainless steel makes for a great shield.

I just love the interface and the implementation of the accelerometer, the fact when u tilt your ipod and it goes to coverflow i thought was great. Its just so cool to use lol. There may not be tactile response, but I rarely operate mp3 players in my pocket nowadays.

I also found the headphone out to be very clean for a portable device. Just a liiiitle bit noisier than my Hi-MD, but very well within acceptable bounds.

I checked out the BSE for the ipod touch. Is that thing easy to apply? and does it really protect your ipod touch from accidents like a drop onto solid pavement? (I'll try not to do that, but you never know when things like these do happen )

Edit: BSE requires you to wet film before applying it to your device? doesn't that kill the touch screen?

I own a firstgen touch with the invisible shield on it. It might not be the BSE but the bundled spray doesn't affect the touchscreen, so water won't either.

wouldnt the water/solution seep into the holes/gaps of the device though? I'm not too keep on putting any type of fluid on my expensive mp3 player But if its as good as they say it is, I might give it a try.

Alternatively, could get those static screen protectors and a silicone case, since the touch is so thin it wouldnt hurt to add a few mm of thickness to it.

The water won't kill it, just be sure not to soak the whole thing in a bowl of water :P.

By the way, are 2g iPod Touches Jailbreak-friendly?
If you are having trouble with your player, please visit this thread first and try the steps before you panic. Most likely you will be able to fix your player easily using the steps listed.

The wet film didn't seem to be an issue in fact I found the BSE a lot easier to fit than I expected but for best results it is not a quick process. The front is pretty straight forward and once fitted I left it for a couple of hours before doing the back which basically requires that you fit it and line it up with all the buttons an ports smooth it down with a cloth or credit card to force out any excess water and then leave it for a few hours to dry before trying to fold and fit the sides. If they will not stay down just leave it a bit longer and then try again. I did not have any problems with air bubbles or dust and after about 24 hours it is barely perceivable.

Not sure about a pavement drop and not keen to test it but it is certainly extremely scratch resistant and I just keep it clean of finger prints with a light spray of weak water and detergent solution to remove oils and a buff with a soft cloth every now and then.

I also picked up a softish iPhone slip pouch from dealextreme for a whole $2.80 shipped.

No not yet but it is just a matter of time, although as JK pointed out with the App Store on the 2G not sure what the advantages will be unless you just want to avoid having to pay a couple of bucks for an app. Not sure I could be bothered unless it adds some extra functionality.

It's already been jailbroken, my friend has 2.1 with Cydia and Installer on it. What they're trying to add to the firmware is the ability to run tasks in the background, not sure how that will prove useful.

    Back to the main topic:

Well, it's not great to convert, neither is it that bad, but would you like to face endless upgrades and I'll post this once again:

Firmware 2.1 on the first generation Touch has been jailbroken for some time but the second generation Touch is running 2.1.1, has new hardware components (cpu, speaker, dac etc) and needs iTunes 8 all of which make the current jailbreak options redundant so they are basically having to start from scratch. 2.2 is also rumored for release sometime in November so a final jailbreak solution for the iPhone 3G and 2nd Gen Touch may not be available until next year.

Well I'm not being forced by apple to upgrade lol. I just feel like updating my devices and having used the ipod touch 2g, I think it suits my needs well.

If you have a first Gen, it's not worth upgrading. Only new things are Speaker buttons, Speaker, and rounded looks. Oh, and a new CPU, and as stated by Blackstar, better SQ (I have yet to try one at the Apple Store).

I've tried it, the interface is smoother, and as for the SQ, I didn't have my earbuds handy. Still fingerprint and scratch attractant and needs a case (Apple's company partnerships, yeesh).

The screen is made from synthetic diamond or something last time I checked.

I was talking about the back of the player, it's scratch attractant. Both the screen and backing are fingerprint magnets.
