mp5?!
I was in a Chinese computer mall in China yesterday, and on one of the escalators was advertising one of China's brands of "mp5" players. I realize that they name video players "mp4", since a long time ago, probably to tell the consumers that this is the next level after mp3. mp5, however, seems to be an upgrade that may be anything. My speculation:
- Live TV
- Cell phone
- Real Media

Wow you traveled from China to Canada pretty fast.

No, I was in China from signing up to now. I live in Canada though, to explain my profile. It wouldn't make any sense that I traveled so fast, because none of my posts have had a 14 hour difference from the last one.

Yeah, just another Chinese marketing gimmick.
Can't wait to play with the Meizu MX!

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsWow! You're so behind! MP5 players have been around for a while now. Video players arent MP4, the MP4 term is used to describe players from China. Here's how it works:
MP4: Basic player from China, plays .MTV, .AMV or .AVI and .FLV videos as well as MP3 and WMA (the term "MP4" can also be used when talking about Chinese players in general)
MP5: MP5 are the players that play RealMedia files and are advertised to play many video formats without conversion. Example: Onda VX767
MP6: The first MP6 player was released some time ago (last month, I think it was Newman brand), MP6 players have WiFi (whether for internet radio or Internet browser, and some with cameras have the capacity to upload videos directly to YouTube.Last edited by EtOmar; 07-21-2008 at 08:40 PM.

Hmm... It does make sense, though. Converting files is a hassle.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsJob's right, there is no such thing as mp4, mp5, mp6 players. This numbering is supposed to confuse people and doesn't give them any idea about the functionality and quality of the player. iPod is one of the few real mp4 players but even Apple doesn't call it that way.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsWell, technically, MP4, MP5, and MP6 players don't really exist to us outside of China. To those in China, the term MP4 was created to differentiate chinese players from the rest of the well known players from companies like Apple, and is not related to MP4 format. The terms MP5 and MP6 were created mostly for advertising, but are now used to classify the different types of Chinese players depending on their specs.

The PSP is also a real mp4 player. I would laugh if the model number was that...

OFF TOPIC:
What kinda visa problem are you having? A lot of people have been having trouble getting new visa's because of the Olympics. I have heard of people who have been here for many years, working, that were denied and had to leave.
What do you usually do here anyways? How long have you been here?
Also at jkpwnster, where abouts are you based in China?

Sichuan. Visiting family, came last year as well. Had no questions about visa, even though I'm a Canadian citizen. I've been in China since 2 days before I registered here.
I bought my Meizu miniPlayer M6 last year here as well. Got it for 699CNY = 102USD.

Whats it like down there at the moment? Were your family affected by the quake? How long are you here for?

Until Sept. Family was affected, but not too badly. The apartment's fine, but there's a nice crack going down a wall. Nothing too serious, though. Everything's fine here, and life goes on as normal as usually, but there are some minor aftershocks.
~Now can we stay on topic?Last edited by JkPwNsTeR; 07-22-2008 at 04:15 AM. Reason: It's a wall, not THE wall.
