HTC Touch anyone?
Hi all
A new phone has been released in June by HTC, a Taiwanese cellular phone company. The new phone is called HTC Touch, and is quite a cool phone. The link is here:
http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch.htm
I am wondering if anyone has any contact with this phone, any suggestions as to whether this phone would be good to buy. I am also interested in a comparison between this phone and the iPhone, both by capabilities and value for money. Both are available on ebay, prices:
HTC Touch: AUD $550.00
Apple iPhone: AUD $880.00
And of course there is the MiniOne, but that's a different story :D

Seemed very nice but at first sight I noticed how sloooow it is... While navigating you can count a few seconds between some of the menus... and that's something I wouldn't bear :-/

i tried it it a store for about 5 minutes
while the phone is very nice and small the touchscreen is slow and you need to press rather hard for it to recognize your command...
i like my touchscreens lightning fast so that was a no go on the Touch
too bad cause otehrwise i would have considered it for sure

HTC make the O2 XDA branded PDA phones in the UK. I will be purchasing one for myself within the next few months - the build quality is superb and the thing has better specs than the laptop I'm typing this message on =]. The XDA Mini S (the one I will be buying) is available from ebay brand new from about £150 =D
I expect the rest of HTC's products to be up to the same standard - that one certainly looks pretty cool.

if you have other HTC phone you could even load a cooked room from XDA developers which has the touchFlo in it... seems to work the same exact way.

I don't quite understand what you mean there marcelo1251. So is the touchFlo thing good or not? According to Job and others, it is rather unresponsive and slow to an extent. Because the HTC Touch isn't out in Australia in-stores, I cannot try it out... so I am relying on you guys to tell me :D
My friend has a i-Mate phone with the exact same processor as the HTC touch (200Mhz). When he plays full-screen videos, it lags (also, he has clocked his phone too). He told me it is because it is using the CPU at 100%. Anyone can explain to me why it lags on his phone? And would it lag on the HTC touch then?
Looks like I'll wait for the M8, as the processor is much better (667Mhz). Is iPhone the same? (Apple has kept it secret but according to Endgadget, it is 667Mhz ARM11).

sorry no exact explenation why it lags...it just does..
besides that what ticked me off most if the amount of pressures needed for activate a function...almost close to a regular button
if they can fix the touchscreen responsiveness with a firmware update I am getting one

I have a HTC Herald (P4350), which is fairly small and has a dedicated sliding qwerty keyboard. Even though this one has 201 mhz processor, it is actually faster than others, and it can even compare to HTC Hermes which is a 400mhz processor. Well check it out and see some reviews, you may like this one.
The HTC Touch on the other hand doesnt have a dedicated sliding out keyboard which means that people do have problems typing messages, which is what this type of PDA/Phone is meant to be for (pushed emails - business use) but they say its more for multimedia. You can though change the on-screen keyboard to larger 3rd party ones so that you can use your fingers on it.
In terms of responsiveness it does seem slow but that seems normal since it has been just released. I'm sure you can overclock it to say 240 or 260mhz. The OS is also different to the normal Windows Mobile 6.
I'm sure you can get a cooked up HTC Touch ROM and put it on your other HTC but the question relies will it work based on that phones hardware and button positioning. For example, because i have a sliding keyboard, it obviously wont recognize the keys that i press. Then again i guess you just have to try it to know.
Oh, believe it or not the HTC Touch is really small, in fact i think its the smallest PDA/Phone i've seen.

I think the best choice at the moment is the Minione. Faster processor, bigger screen, good hardware, etc.

I recently purchased the touch in HK and so far really like it. I can sync all my contacts, schedules, notes, documents..etc without any hassle. But what I mainly use besides texting and calling is PlecoDict(Chinese-English dictionary which runs on PPC or PalmOS). But I can't answer any questions regarding music and movie since I am not convinced that and phone to this day is suitable to replace and mp3/4 player. I tend to listen to music alot and the occactional movie(great on 30 hour train rides through China) and don't want to sacrafice listening to music in fear of draining my battery. That's why I purchased an M6 8GB so I have more then enough storage and a decent battery life for my music/movie needs.
And I am still not sure why people keep comparing the Touch to the iPhone. The touch screen is nice but it only masks the WM that hasen't changed (speaking in terms of UI) for quite some time.
The Touch only comes with a 1GB card but I find myself utilizing that storage to install my apps due to the less the adequate onboard memory.
If you want more info on the HTC Touch visit http://www.howardforums.com
and click on the HTC link for a whole thread on rants and raves of the Touch and even some comparisons to the iPhone.
All I can say is if you originally had no intension of getting a WM phone before the HTC Touch came out and think that the HTC Touch is the WM version of the iPhone then this phone is probably not for you. The Touch's UI is not as fluid as the iPhone's and only comes with 1GB storage while the iPhone comes with 4 and 8. I am not even sure if there exist and 8GB microSD card at the moment however seems like the 4GB are around 60USD.

I agree with all of your points made but i belive thet HTC toutch is not quite as functional or powerfull than the other phones... No offence to what you say , But the processor is about one third that of the iphone and M8 , This is vital in loading speed , Video framerate count , Fast booting ect , Although sdram has an impacxt , seeing as the M8 has double that of the HTC toutch , it means you can run many more applications at the same time on the system , This was not very vital on Pocket Pc windows 5 to my understanding , But im not sure about CE... It may overload the ram with small applications and load vital processes onto the memory card much like virtual memory on Windows PCS. Lowering responce rate and speed of the overall system...
Invloving features
The HTC toutch just beats the Iphone with its micro SD slot... But its thrashed by the M8... The HTC toutch and iphone have a much much lower resoloution so it will be difficult to read small text and it wont have a true colour system (I belive 65k is about 16 bit colours whereas the m6 is 250k which is 20 bit colours ... 16,500,000 is 24 bit and i dunno what 32bit is but 32 bit differance is invisible to the human eye.) Showing the dramatic differance in colour variation you can see the image wont be as crisp and life like on the HTC toutch to the Iphone and M8...
I still wanna know about the details regarding inbuilt DVB-H tuner , It was said to be built in but im unsure now...
The HTC toutch however is alot smaller than the Iphone and M8 , its screen size is more relative to the M6 than the M8 , therefore due to its low resoloution but small screensize the aspect/ pixel per inch ratio is kept almost identical , and betters the iphone.
Now im not sure if that says 850 mhz or 201 mhz , If its 201 , HTC touch is far less powerfull , if its 850 then thats more than adaquate and the ram should be improved on the htc totch. It depends on what conditions you need if chose to buy the phone or not.
