Ive recently Bought an Onda VX 858 (or Onda Honey, Or Pasen I-Touch in Italy) and thought i would post my opinion as many people seem to be asking.
I bough the Onda on e-bay in a no reserve auction for £40 GBP inc postage, circa $80 USD. this is just over half the value that they are presently selling in the UK for, and i was lucky to get one so cheap, though the full price ones do not seem to be moviong particularly quickly.
This is a decent player, a friend lent me a Cowon D2 for a long coach journey and while i felt the screen was a little small to watch at length, i was impressed. Its an expensive device though, and devices with bigger better screens are even more expensive which for someone like me who only want to use their player occasionaly for video seems a waste. Even at its 'normal' price The onda is a reasonable balance between cost and features.
Im no audiophile and mainly listen to music while commuting, at the gym and studying, and i have had no problems with the sound quality. With a decent set of enclosed headphones I would describe it as very good. There is a speaker which is acceptablly loud, not too tinny, it can be toggled on and off via a menu icon and is not dependant on headphones being inserted or removed.
Video playback is crisp and comparable to the D2. I was actually pleasantly surprised at first. I have had problems with longer files going out of sync. Where ever i fast forward to the audio is in sync, but after 10 mins it begins to drift. I do not know if this the conversion software or the player.
There are several videos on Youtube showing the onda. These show off the player quite well (yes, the Jessica simpson video is installed out of the box) though the user seems to be having some problems with the touchscreen, pressing hard and frequently. It certainly takes a little getting used to. from 'idle' the player requires 3 taps, one to activate the touch screen to respond, one to then bring up the menu and another to tap on your selected option. If the icon you wish to click on is visible it requires only one touch which responds faster. repsonsiveness is in the order of a half second which, until you are used to it, feels a little 'laggy'. Having used it for a couple of weeks though i have no problems with it, and am not still stabbing away at it like the man in the video. The only disappointment here is that you must hold fast forward/rewind to move through a song/film, it is not possible to drag the progress bar with your finger.
some +'s and-'s to stop me rambling...
+ Unlike some devices, will allow you to write/read the SD card and the inbuilt Flash similtaneously while connected to PC. Both display as seperate removable drives.
+ Charges from USB, no charger included but i picked up a motorola V3 charger for £2 and this has worked fine for me so far.
- No Playlists (though you can create folders to 'seperate' music)
- Bundled AVI conversion software is basic but works.
- Some adverts have implied there are two 3.5mm headphone jacks. There are not there is only one.
- Screen hard to see in direct sunlight
- difficult to find firmware upgrade (there is a firmware upgrade for the Pasen i touch as of 04 09 07 should i try that and rebrand my device to Pasen?)
I think the market for these kind of players will tighten in the run up to xmas, esp as at full price these players pale in comparison to the new ipods that have just come out yesterday. If you hold on the market might give you a bargain.
If like me though you can only look forlornly at the ipod touch 16GB and wonder why you bothered graduating, and why you belived the man who tricked you into your various overdraft / loan / mortgage / hangover / antidepressants then the onda is a small ray of hapiness in a life of bitter middle aged regret.
Man, when i think about when i managed to talk my dad into buying a zx spectrum in 1987, i wish i could go back in time and tell myself to hold out for a touch.
Not for my dad to touch me ... thats wrong. For him to to give me an i pod touch.
sorry

, almost made it to the end with a
