Onda Vx858 Cool or Crap? Post Your Thoughts!

Looking around for an extra mp3 player I came across the Onda Vx858

While the looks are obviously Iphone derived it does look like a cool player
There doesn't seem to be any review available in English though

Does anyone know anything about this player?

Please continue discussion of this non-Meizu MP3 player at MP4 Users.

If i were you id save my money and wait till the M8 comes out aswell. For an extra £40 or whatever the basic M8 comes . As you get wifi a phone , a nice interface , Mobile TV , 2 cameras and decent games , bluetooth(I assume it comes with bluetooth) and you can get addon gps. A proper processer and ddr memory. Personally id wait for the quality M8 to come out. It may not be what you want exactly , Its more.
BTW , any hints on memory slots on the M8??? Surley a sd or mini or micro sd adapter must be planeted somwhere , If i bought the m8 id use it for a good 3 years and 16gb would be dated by then, That would be the basic amount for all players. Hmm.

And by the way , alot of people say the M8 is a rip of the iphone , I think not. A new era of styles has come out , If you think about it , Alot of phones have similarities that people cirrently use , Same with the Iphone and M8. Its like saying 10 years ago somone came up with the clamshell design and somone else did the same thing after them.

See it as a new style of phones , Not a unqiue consept by apple.

now all i have to do is find a review somewhere and see if the touchscreen is any good, the file navigation is fast and how the sound quality measures up

yep maybe i should but the 2 teclast players i have had so far weren't that good(T29, C280) the GIU drives me nuts
The GUI of the Onda Vx858 at least looks good
that's why i am looking for a review but cant find anything other than Chinese

No OGG or Flac support but why microSD-support? Is it skinable? Stylus pen for a mp3player ... a nice joke. :-)

How about an OLED-Display, wifi support and streaming client that would be a killer for meizu. But I guess we will see this features at first on a meizu product.

When I pressed the music function once, I waited nothing happened so I pressed it a few more times then it brought the music screen up. the fast forward was also fairly clumsy and unresponsive as well...

And man, you can't compare any sound to the M6/M3, they are top not. To me the Onda sounded slightly better than those cheap Chinese players. The only pro for the Onda was the lovely huge screen for vids.

that makes it a no-go for me...
i hate unresponsive touchscreens...
Wont be getting the T39 either i think due to the regular Teclast problems like bad GUI and no ID3 tag support...

Onda VX858

Ive recently Bought an Onda VX 858 (or Onda Honey, Or Pasen I-Touch in Italy) and thought i would post my opinion as many people seem to be asking.

I bough the Onda on e-bay in a no reserve auction for £40 GBP inc postage, circa $80 USD. this is just over half the value that they are presently selling in the UK for, and i was lucky to get one so cheap, though the full price ones do not seem to be moviong particularly quickly.

This is a decent player, a friend lent me a Cowon D2 for a long coach journey and while i felt the screen was a little small to watch at length, i was impressed. Its an expensive device though, and devices with bigger better screens are even more expensive which for someone like me who only want to use their player occasionaly for video seems a waste. Even at its 'normal' price The onda is a reasonable balance between cost and features.

Im no audiophile and mainly listen to music while commuting, at the gym and studying, and i have had no problems with the sound quality. With a decent set of enclosed headphones I would describe it as very good. There is a speaker which is acceptablly loud, not too tinny, it can be toggled on and off via a menu icon and is not dependant on headphones being inserted or removed.

Video playback is crisp and comparable to the D2. I was actually pleasantly surprised at first. I have had problems with longer files going out of sync. Where ever i fast forward to the audio is in sync, but after 10 mins it begins to drift. I do not know if this the conversion software or the player.

There are several videos on Youtube showing the onda. These show off the player quite well (yes, the Jessica simpson video is installed out of the box) though the user seems to be having some problems with the touchscreen, pressing hard and frequently. It certainly takes a little getting used to. from 'idle' the player requires 3 taps, one to activate the touch screen to respond, one to then bring up the menu and another to tap on your selected option. If the icon you wish to click on is visible it requires only one touch which responds faster. repsonsiveness is in the order of a half second which, until you are used to it, feels a little 'laggy'. Having used it for a couple of weeks though i have no problems with it, and am not still stabbing away at it like the man in the video. The only disappointment here is that you must hold fast forward/rewind to move through a song/film, it is not possible to drag the progress bar with your finger.

some +'s and-'s to stop me rambling...

+ Unlike some devices, will allow you to write/read the SD card and the inbuilt Flash similtaneously while connected to PC. Both display as seperate removable drives.
+ Charges from USB, no charger included but i picked up a motorola V3 charger for £2 and this has worked fine for me so far.

- No Playlists (though you can create folders to 'seperate' music)
- Bundled AVI conversion software is basic but works.
- Some adverts have implied there are two 3.5mm headphone jacks. There are not there is only one.
- Screen hard to see in direct sunlight
- difficult to find firmware upgrade (there is a firmware upgrade for the Pasen i touch as of 04 09 07 should i try that and rebrand my device to Pasen?)

I think the market for these kind of players will tighten in the run up to xmas, esp as at full price these players pale in comparison to the new ipods that have just come out yesterday. If you hold on the market might give you a bargain.

If like me though you can only look forlornly at the ipod touch 16GB and wonder why you bothered graduating, and why you belived the man who tricked you into your various overdraft / loan / mortgage / hangover / antidepressants then the onda is a small ray of hapiness in a life of bitter middle aged regret.

Man, when i think about when i managed to talk my dad into buying a zx spectrum in 1987, i wish i could go back in time and tell myself to hold out for a touch.

Not for my dad to touch me ... thats wrong. For him to to give me an i pod touch.

sorry , almost made it to the end with a .

The Onda looks nice, but really has a couple of drawbacks.

does the player recognize and use the 4 GB high-capacity mini SDHC cards?

I've returned to the provider my M6, due to its problems of tapping at end of the tracks. I prefer to have the headaches with my lovely M3, which as machine IMHO is better than M6, in manufacture and sound.
I've changed it by an Onda VX858, due to its 2.8" screen, the presence of Wolfson WM8750 audio decoder and its mini SD slot, ah... I've saved some bucks in the change.
Basically VX858 is a Rockchip device, with all the limitations and reliability of this chip, is as skinnable as a Rockchip devices, which means within limits, touch screen is not as responsive as it should by finger, but works fine using a pen, like a normal PDA.
Onda is releasing firmwares as often as Teclast. In the version I've installed 0.00.0016, there is support for APE and FLAC, but more will come soon, according what Onda have offered.
I haven't had time to listen to music relaxed, but Wolfson audio decoder have been choose too by Teclast due to its quality. I hope it sound accordingly.
Video looks awesome as in any rockchip. TFT is really good.
As a Rockchip device all is carried through navigator, no MTP support yet, nor selection by artist, album, etc.
