I tell you what to do. It worked for me on xp, maybe it works on vista too.
go to the dfu tool installation folder.
Edit the secdfu file. Write "S5L8700 Rev.1" instead of "SST39VF800.dfu"
And write M3.EBN instead of M6.EBN.
Copy an paste the M3.EBN and the resource file to the folder.
    open dfu tools.
connect the player while you hold the play and m button. And during the whole procedure you have to hold them.
Press download and it should be done.
I hope it works, cos it really worked for me and made my player living again.
seems to be the only thing that's working for people with the same problem I'm having.

And i've pushed pretty hard making sure not to let go the buttons while connecting the player. And yes, I've made sure I kept pushing the buttons when connected.

Does it connect to the computer normally? If so, just update the firmware and you should be set.

    @ Adikosa

Thank you so much for this tiny tutorial. My M3 is back in black

After reading "...Failed to open...S5L8700 Rev.1.dfu" I renamed the .dfu and it works well.

I tried this method and i renamed the .dfu as described by Dave Bowman.
i connected the Player while pushing menu+play button and holding it. But the update button ind DFU is still disabled. The player is not connected to the PC and i can't find it in explorer . Any ideas?
