Just a couple of (hopefully) simple suggestions

Can someone set the battery indicator to go red when it is close to running out (green full amber at half). Also can the text for the ebook reader be set to black on beige instead of white on black which would make it look more like a printed book.

Battery indicator colour change when the battery is depleting: nope, it's a skin limitation, it doesn't support that.

For e-books, you may set a special background colour under the picture browser. You may choose a wallpaper of your choice, including a beige one. As for the text, you only have the options of the settings menu, and that option is global for all of the UI. Sorry.
