Hi and welcome to this forum. It is no real news that VirtualDub is a nice piece of software and working fine. The only problem it has, is that it lacks a wide range of input formats (and output formats). If you would like to recompress such formats as .flv, .wmv or .mp4, you're lost with VirtualDub. As long as the only source format you ever convert is .avi, VirtualDub is a good option, though.

i prefer virtualdubmod, it has a wider format support (like the newer .mkv)

I prefer to use Batman and just have it do it all for me after I extract the vob from the DVD's. Simple and looks good!
