Agreed with you in general - at least i can agree with someone, anyone on this forum :P

To get back on topic: We'll see what Meizu does with these new GUI plans, I want to see the final product before i'm making any (positive) judgements.
They better decide on those buttons too.

New picture here, showing off......something.

I guess that now Mr. Wong tries to copy Samsung Touchwiz interface with all it's movable widgets kinda thing .
Anyways, I hope it will evolve into something brand new and interesting.

It's nice that J.Wong has finally decided to start redesigning the GUI (and some of the external layout too), but unfortunately I dislike all the proposed changes so far:

1. The new standby screen now looks very Vista / Windows Mobile.. just like every other WM smartphone out there.. and there are plenty of those already! M8 needs to look more special/unique than that, and the current layout (even if too iPhone-ish) does a better job at that IMO.
I fear that if this is the new GUI direction, then the M8 will become just another WM device, and will no longer be a direct competitor to the iPhone. Personally, in that case I don't think it would interest me any more.
Why not change just the obviously similar design elements (icon design, button locations, transition effects, navigation structure, different skin, etc.) but keep the overall concept?

(I know I mentioned it before, but what I mean is something like this: New Meizu M8 Picture)

2. The 3 round speaker holes on the top changed to an iPhone-ish single long hole. I really like the 3 holes, and I think they gave the M8 more personality, so I really don't like this change if it goes through.

3. Finally, I didn't like the bottom 3 equal circle buttons, but this new version with the middle button bigger is even worse IMO.
There's a MUCH better alternative on the Meizu BBS:

I totally agree, this picture looks great! If it stays like that then i will certainly buy it.
If J Wong wants the best for his customers he should do a vote on which GUI the public like the most.

i hope that windows mobile will allow every user to set the screens to his/her personal preferences, so everybody will be happy, but i also prefer the one in the photo here:

but i do not think it will bother me very much if its not this one.

This is very bad news to me, it just means more delay, no matter what you say it is more delay, as they have to redo the GUI! The main reason I liked the look of this phone was because I own an M6 and it's a quality ipod 'inspired' device! These new screens make it look dull and really boring, bring back the iPhone icons and their nice bright, hi res candy colours. I don't care if people say to me, oh that's a clone, because no one will, they will be too busy saying.. wow! Cool phone!
If meizu release the M8 and it looks like this, I will get the iPhone 2, or maybe I will just swim in a bath of gold, considering how much those things cost unlocked over here.
And you can't say this GUI has been in the pipelines for ages, I liekd the one they showed at CeBit, and now Wong has taken engadgets comments really badly, I think he should ignore them, rather than try and redesign the whole thing just to please some snobby americans that are trying to ruin a reputable company's image, beacuse they are rich and can afford an iPhone.
I mean, the way they spoke to Wong at CeBit, they were so snobby! They were practically saying: 'so how do you respond to the claims that you are a cheap rip off artist that makes money off the creativity of others and deserves to die?' They were really mean to him, I wanted to hit them! Poor Wong :D
Rant over.
Please leave the GUI nice and smart looking, not boring looking!
Thanks.

yeah I really liked the old GUI too. I too am a real sucker for those crispy brightly coloured icons. I do think Wong should have told enagadget to suck his balls. Then again the new design isn't that bad and if the clock and calender icon are really smooth, detailed and sharp like this vista widgets then It might be nice. You can always put a tasty wallpaper up too. Tbh I've liked all the GUI renderings that Meizu have shown of the M8 to date, even the early ones. I definitely have faith it will look crisp whatever they put out. I don't mind the look from that old fan art >>>>

but then again the icons are boring, I much prefer the colourful complex icons they had on the prototype.

The user interface on that photo is the same that Meizu took to CeBIT. It looks very nice but is a bit too similar to the iPhone IMO.

But the reason why I put that example was not the UI. It was to show an alternative solution for the 3 physical buttons, because in my opinion the new suggestion (3 circles, with the middle one slightly bigger) is even worse than the current 3 equal circles.

I also like those nice colourful icons over the black background. It looked really stylish on the posters at CeBIT.
What I like from that fan art are not the icons or home page background, but the glassy toolbar skin. I think that skin is a good example of how the UI could change without becoming dull or Windows Mobile-ish.

Anyway, you can rest assured, because J.W. said that the the main menu/home screen would not change:
