Live shots of Meizu miniOne M8 CeBIT Prototype

The folks over at Engadget have now visted the Meizu CeBIT booth again, and this time taken photos of the Meizu M8 miniOne engineering prototype next to a iPhone for comparison.

We now finally see how the rumored three button layout is going to look like on the M8.

Meizu CEO Jack Wong said earlier that the plastics on the CeBIT prototype were not the final production materials, which explains why there is a white part on the back of the phone that does not fit with the overall design.

The white plastic looks odd and I guess that's what J Wong was referring to in his post about using some plastics that won't be on the production version.
Glad they dropped the chrome trim and kept it dropped; it definitely differentiates the M8 from the all the clones being churned out these days.

I was hoping the M8 would be out before I left China this summer, but I guess not

yeah, i agree. i don't see why that needed to be patented...

Overall I'm not impressed, especially considering they didn't even have an almost working prototype there. All it could do was display screenshots of the GUI.. ooooh, impressive...

When you see it next to the iPhone, it just looked like your 'run of the mill" knock off, to be totally honest.

Hopefully the final product won't be so plasticy and wont just display screenshots, eh?

Hmm... considering their bad experiences with writing firmware they should consider opening this platform, releasing the specs, and let community do the job. I'd like to see Android running on this thing.

I'm glad it turned out not to be just a plastic dummy, and i have to eat some of my own words.
I think it will be enough to keep the hype running but it is still somewhat dissappointing not to see more than 3 still screens.
Perhaps they will show more of the GUI on the development boards later on.

I still look forward to the interview that will be conducted by Tangmu, hopefully we will get more detailed information.

The August timeframe to release seems obvious to try and get it ready in time for the August Beijing Olympic Games.
Even if not in stores, it will create some buzz around China with an worldwide audience.
I know that if it turns out to be what is expected, i will surely ask someone I know that goes there to buy me one if it's available!

P.S.: no mention of GPS...i think we can forget about that one.

I dont really know how to feel about it....

Engadget didn't lie after all (would be surprised if they did) as there was no working prototype to be shown. The plastic screenshotcanon with rofl mousepointer in the middle was just showing screens I'd already seen, the model also doesn't look pretty in particular as it clearly was a first prototype. The presence of the mobo doesn't really have additional value to me right now and i'm disappointed by the clear lack of 3G. I mean, come on, you buy a phone in august 2008 to use it for a "couple of years" that has no 3G which will gain popularity in the "coming year(s)". 3G iPhone is heavily rumored to come out on the half-year mark this year.

Rofl the buttons look kinda ugly to be honest, don't really understand what there is to patent on 3 buttons next to eachother. It looks okay on frontal view but those 3 circles from an angle look....weard.

EDIT: Forget my comment on the useless mainboard and check Engadget newest video.

To be honest - I do not like the Iphone style. I really hope they:

- of course: increase the usability (it really s***s)

- but also: make the style highly exchangeable - (ALL) the icons, background and so on
- DO NOT copy the rubbish SMS apple bubbles from i-Chat (as on the i-Phone)
- make even Opera highly theme-able
- make an easy save and export theme feature (glory to the forum)
- make use of the GPU - it's expensive, so use it

Finally - as I already - pointed out elsewhere: make the UI open source!

P.S.: Why not return to the grass background (I hate the world map). I prefer the vistaish style from earlier mock ups. I hope one can also freely move the icon position (even if you have to hard code it with a file).

Only some thoughts...

I just can't wait for the final phone, hope they'll fix that 1000ms response time (I think the lag was caused by not yet fully optimised software so the CPU was running 100% all the time).

@midsommer - It said 3D games on the booth's wall, I expect things like smooth texturing, shading and such (graphics like in, say, good ol' NFS II SE)

P.S the cursor really made my day

I was thinking of GPU acceleration for the Desktop. e.g. Compiz-fusion, Berly, Vista, OS-X
