Apple halts Meizu M8 production with help from Chinese authorities

Following negotiations with Apple that looks to have gone sour, Apple has through the Chinese state Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) managed to stop Meizu's production of the Meizu M8. SIPO claims that the M8 "looks too similar" to the iPhone, and Meizu CEO Jack Wong agreed to Apple and SIPO's terms to stop producing the phone in face of a potential factory closure.

However, Jack says that Apple later changed their mind, and are now demanding that Meizu not only stop production, but also stop all display and sales of the remaining stock of Meizu M8 phones. China's SIPO has the right to close factories without a court order, which means that Meizu's factory could be shut down if they do not comply. Jack is angry as he claims that this is not part of the original deal, and also that this will force a lot of Meizu's franchised stores to go out of business. Enraged, he also claims that Meizu are willing to take this to the courts if Apple and SIPO continues to pressure Meizu to stop selling their current stock of M8s. Jack feared an eventual factory closure will delay the highly anticipated Meizu M9 further.

On a positive note, Jack also mentioned that the local Zhuhai government is supporting Meizu.

The official Chinese Meizu forum is currently under lockdown with posts on this topic being deleted.

I am aware Apple sued HTC, but it's going nowhere fast. My point is that it almost appears like Apple shut down Meizu (temporary) without even a lawsuit.


I sure hope Nokia v. Apple will turn out in our (Nokia's) favor. Also, I think it will, as the patents Nokia are suing them about are GSM core patents, on other words vital and strong patents.

Apple v. Nokia on the other side - weak software patents, I can't see them get anywhere with it.

Suing Meizu in China, they'd likely go nowhere fast as well, which is why they went with SIPO. Hmm... perhaps with some money under the table? Or free iPhones?

You are mostlikely right. Some one has gotten some money from Apple. Cause they can´ stop production following official laws since Meizu has a license from the Chinese government.

Anyway, my guess is that apple will sue Meizu when M9 comes out, and they can do this since it would run Android...

Apple had invested a lot of money in the chinese government/market and apple don't like competion. That's Business on a high level.
