They really need to get a new designer for their hardware. Firstly, this thing shouldn't have physical buttons - Android 4.0 has set the new standard. Secondly, it still looks like the old iPhone, except now they made the back cover worse!

The screen size and resolution should have increased to 1280x720 like LG, Samsung and HTC are doing, because now Meizu loses the one thing they had going for them - screen quality. Increasing the size to 4" but keeping the same resolution is going to make the display look worse than the M9.

I expected to see a higher capacity battery, but it looks like there's no 4G/LTE support, so it probably doesn't matter too much.

The only noteworthy advantage I see coming from an M9 is the camera, and perhaps the processor. It feels like Meizu is launching their new device at the end of the current generation. For their sake, I hope the OS is stable, and that it sells cheaply, because there's better options out there that you can buy right now.

Oh my God. didn't expect that! Never would have guessed that they update their website before leaking the final date on BBS.
Looks like there will be the creapy shiny white back cover after all.... oh dear

You're right, it shouldnt have physical buttons. But did they know this when they started the development? Probably not

I dont think this looks like the iphone 3g or 3gs, it looks more like a mixture between IP4 and SGS2.
Why increase resolution? It will have a direct impact on performance. Today the most powerful android smartphone is galaxy note (same cpu as MX and same clockspeed), while MX has a lower res, it will probably perform better making it the most powerful smartphone. Besides, 960x640 will still be high enough, you probably wont know the difference between this and galaxy nexus.

The battery is a bit of a shame considering the SGS2 has a hard time running for a day with a 1650 (I upgraded to 2000 as soon as possible).

    The advantages are quite many:
Cheap (if you compare to SGS2, GN, sensation)
Powerful (it will probably outperform all current smartphones)
High resolution (how many phones today can match Meizus PPI?)

Btw, does anyone know if the MX uses pentile matrix?

Fair call, but it's still an uninspired design.

The SGSII has a lower res (made up by the fact that it is SuperAMOLED+), so wouldn't that (by your logic) make the SGSII more powerful than the MX?

Either way, your logic is flawed. The SoC can handle the higher res perfectly fine. If the Galaxy Nexus can run buttery smooth with it's 720p res, then I don't see why the MX should be any different. Either way, the most demanding apps (i.e. games) can scale their resolution to maintain performance.

PPI is very noticeable up to 320ppi. I'm willing to bet that the M9 is noticeably crisper. Someone should do a side-by-side review.

It's not really cheap. An unlocked SGSII is $538.00 (delivered) in Australia with a 12 month warranty. The MX is quoted as "$470", but if the M9 is anything to go by, actually finding one at this price is rare. You also need to track down someone in China that can a) actually find one in stock, b) is willing to buy you one. Not only that, buy now you have to pay for international shipping, and you lose local warranty. So it ends up being the same price for a lower quality phone.

I'm not sure why you're convinced that the MX is somehow more powerful than "all current smartphones". It isn't.

Its high resolution matches many current smartphones, and because they increased the size, their PPI has dropped dramatically. So there's nothing special there.
