M9: Problem with GPS-Localization
Hello to everyone!
I hope somebody can help me with some information. I have a problem with my M9 here in Germany. In general i love my M9 and I'm really satisfied wit the device. The only thing is the GPS-location which doesn't seem to work.
I cannot locate my device by GPS, so the only localizations i get are via Wi-Fi and the radio cell, which are both not very exactly. When i try to locate my mobile by only activating the GPS, i get an error message telling me, that there is no information available. The whole GPS functionality doesn't seem to work at all.
"User wireless networks" and "Use GPS satellites" is active, of course, in the "location and Security"-menu.
Does anyone experience similar problems with that issue? Does anyone have an idea how to deal with it? I run 2.0.0-17831.
Thanks a lot and best regards!

Thanked 34 Times in 19 PostsMaybe it is HW problem. But before more investigating, try app called GPS Test, then go to Settings and ¨press "Clear AGPS", then press "Update AGPS". This will update A-GPS data for quick positioning and using this app you can also see, what going on with GPS. More detailed program is called GPS Status, it will give you very detailed info about GPS. And one more thing - I found, that GPS becomes non workable in case you dim LCD by power button or leave it to dim by setting in Display. In the other words, if LCD is not active, GPS not working.

If the LCD is not active, GPS is not working - is this a problem related only to a specific firmware or has this been the case also with older versions? It would explain some of the problems I have ...

I'd say this is probably a power saving feature common to all android phones (the idea being, if you're not looking at it, then you don't need it), as GPS can be a very heavy battery user.
The way round it is to try and find a Navigation app that prevents the phone from sleeping.
Or if you use an in car charger, you can set it to stay awake in the phone's USB settings.
Or you can set a long screen timeout, but the maximum is 60 minutes on the M9.Last edited by Straylight; 07-14-2011 at 03:14 PM.

Thanked 34 Times in 19 PostsI try to change it in prepared SW. When using CoPilot or iGo, it is OK, but I am also using Runtastic and here I need to set timeout to 60 mins to have GPS still working. I try let it fix this or add option to menu.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsHi there!
Thanks a lot for the input so far! I think i was able to understand some thing much more better that before, but my original problem is not really solved already. It's wired...
First i installed "GPS Test". When i turn on GPS i indeed reports that on its home screen. The status is not red (which indicates that the whole GPS-thing i switched off) but the litte circle is yellow saying "GPS on". I don't know if there's also a green circle for "everything fine", but i suppose that. ;-)
The sAccuracy level stays at 0,0 feet permanently. I found a screenshot to compare it with my results:
hXXp://fs01.androidpit.info/ass/x10/201810-1271945790019.png
The main difference is that i got 8 "In View" instead of 10 and most notably all the bars are -1 and not existant except for one with values varying from 20 to 30. Also all the times and information about sunrise/sunset are not listed.
I also got "GPS Status" as referred to above but i was not able to get any more information out of it. Last but not least i got "GPSFix" and let it get GPS-information for up to one hour without realizing any effect.
When i disable anything it locates me in my area of the city - by the radio cell i suppose. Adding Wi-Fi brings me up to a street level near the real position. Unfortunately activating the GPS doesn't improve the positioning at all.
I also grabbed "Wissepilot", another navigation software to check if it performs better. It says "No GPS-Signal" although GPS is switched on. Isn't that strange.
Does anyone have an idea?
Best regards!

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsHello,
I seem to have exactly the same problem. I live in Sweden and the GPS localization on my M9 has never worked here. Without knowing much about how GPS technology works, is it possible that the GPS is calibrated in such a way that it doesn't work in this part of the world?
I hope you find a solution to this problem!

Thanked 1 Time in 1 PostHello,
I too have a similar problem with GPS. Sometimes (rarely), it correctly locates my device with GPS. But it takes much time to the correct location. When navigating the unit often loses contact with the satellite. I have the impression that the heating of the device has a negative effect on the GPS receiver.
I use:

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsHallo guys,
correct me if I'm wrong but I suppose these bars in "GPStest" stand for different satellites, which means that my device can usually only find one satellite. Also your case harrybilly could be explained by that. In very rare situations your mobile seems to be able to connect to different satellites and seems to get a correct localization. In generel I get only on bar (sometimes not even that) and that does not seem to bei enough to locate me.
Any ideas? Maybe we should get in touch with Meizu to point them to this thread?

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsThanks a lot for the screenshots. I already thought of something like that to be normal. You got several bars with different heights. I usually have only one single bar, sometimes not even this one but very rarely two or three bars for some seconds. My status is yellow and not green. Seems like my mobile doesn't catch more satellites and I am wondering why is that.

Thanked 34 Times in 19 PostsMaybe it is chip fault. Also, if you are using some kind of bumper, it should cause similair problems. What happened, when you first reset A-GPS data, then click button to download fresh? Also, I must say, that today was here very rainy and heavy clouds, so it takes 13 minutes to lock!!

Thanked 1 Time in 1 PostHello,
I have upgraded from fw19524 on fw5212 and from bb217 on bb223. It seems subjectively that the satellites are now found slightly faster. But the satellite contact breaks ever again so that the GPS in M9 is unusable for navigation in the car.

Thanked 34 Times in 18 PostsHey,
I'm from Germany too. I dropped my Meizu before I checked the GPS. Then It was not working like I thought. I asked here in the forum in the small question thread, because I tought my GPS was not working properly. They told me to go outside of my town. So I did. (In the town I got no positiv bars with GPS Test.)
I don't know if you are using mobile Internet, but A-GPS is using the mobile Internet to locate you quicker. I don't use mobile Internet. So for me it tooked more than 15 min for the gps before connecting with a gps satelite (green or yellow bars in GPS Test). I don't really know, if it has been only 15 min, because I started the program and then I kept the GPS running, turned of the screen with the power button and I played soccer for a while. During a break I had to wait a short while and then I got the yellow/green bars.
I cleared AGPS and updated the AGPS trough GPS Test and I did the GPS fixing with GPSFix before I got the yellow/green bars.
If you check inside a house, you probably won't get a connection,. Even proper navigation systems have often problems with location you if you are inside a building. I will check it again, when I'm on the road.

If you have problems to keep a constant lock on the GPS signal try the program Tracker Booster (you find it on the Android market from HARRI KAUKOVUO). This program keeps the GPS unit active (as long as the screen is NOT turned off!) and I get measurably better results with it.
However I have the problem that my GPS location is not accurate, its about 500meter off the actual location on Google maps. Is there any way to improve this?
