Jack: Meizu Android Squad hard at work

In response to a fan suggesting that Meizu should adopt the Android platform for the Meizu M8, Meizu CEO Jack writes: "We already have a team with the sole purpose of investigating the Android platform."

Will we see Android on Meizu M8? Not likely in the near future. However, Android on the light and stylish Meizu M8 would be really nice, so please Jack, if you're reading, bring it to us quickly!

That's pretty awesome knowing they're actually working on it, but I hope they just don't pull a "Rockbox".

Well, Rockbox was fan-initiated, not really pulled by them.

From a business standpoint, I'm not sure it's the best idea.

If Meizu already has developed a business plan for the upcoming M8 App Store, Android might not be favorably considered due to the fact of that it has got Android Market.

Also, Google isn't as popular in China as in the Western World, so it might leave many Chinese users (Meizu's main market) confused.

Lastly, Meizu will have much less say about the user interface. Something they've already invested heavily in, they might want to keep more control over their graphical elements.

Well it's nice for them to actually provide an alternative, and if they developed the M8 with Android in mind, they could have saved loads on R&D. Unfortunately, Android didn't exist at that time.

And you're right, they probably really don't want to discard all the R&D they invested in, so it's pretty unlikely that they develop the next M8 with Android solely in mind.

I dont agree with the above statement.

Adroid is based on Linux OS and was released as open source.
Its possible for any mobile maker to write their own version of Android with total control over the interface, App Store, search engine or email.

China Mobile is in the process of releasing their own Android OS next month, with a new 3G phone.

Meizu is doing the right thing investing their resources in the mobile market.
And the upcoming models will have support for the Chinese versions of 3G, but the question is if Windows is the right OS for the next generation of smart phones.

Maybe Android it's not the best for chinese market, but It will surely be great for international market / users and just AWESOME for an international Meizu M8 release.

I hope sometime they release an Android firmware for my M8, in fact I was trying to port it myself but the amount of knowledge and reverse engineering required for this task it's overwhelming. Meizu engineers surely are up to the task, and they don't need reverse engineering.

Android it's a novelty, it's free and it offers an alternative to Windows CE.

PD: Also i think there is a new Linux kernel with multi - touch incorporated, that + Android = stunning.

I don't think there is going to be android for the M8.
They skipped so many things, i think they are going to skip this to...
I don't understand why Meizu didn't just put windows mobile 6.5 on the M8, so much developing is needed right now...
Anyways, Android is nice i guess, would be nice, but i dont think it is going to be there for the M8.
And of course the price, will it be free or is it going to cost you a 'little' bit of money?

It's easy to say, hard to actually achieve!

There isn't many GOOD android handsets at the moment. If Meizu release one in the next 6 months with 3g, GPS, etc. It will be an amazingly popular device, there is no doubting that.

    However that is unlikely

Well, personally I don't think either andoid or windows mobile 6.XXX should
    be put on the M8.

Windows mobile 6.XXX is completely outdated/slow/convoluted and built on a very old win Ce 5.0 architecture. Apart from only supporting 65,000 colours even winmo 6.5 is not made for finger use and you can forget about features like multi touch too. Winmo 7....now that will be a different story. It will be heavily optimised for finger use, gesture input, multi touch etc etc and may well be an option.....only thing is it is not out yet.

Winmo 7 will be built on a CE 6.0 framework which we all know, allows for thousands more processes to be run and has a completely redigned kernel etc etc.

However...Meizu's OS has the potential to be very good, as aesthtically it is nice an will probably get better, the problem is they do not have the engineers and expertise at the moment to iron out all the bugs. Plus they are only developing for china so are not testing the phone on foreign networks and trying to iron out faults that arise when it is used outside of China.

As for android. What advantages does android bring? Ok it will not be as buggy and there is a market place. However it will also have very lacklustre media performace and codec support (even 3rd party apps aren't up to scratch yet), and an ugly UI. Android is in my mind not mature enough to be considered and is trailing far far behind OS's like Palm's Web OS for the Pre or Apples OSX for iphone.

Win Ce 6.0 is a mature and sturdy framwork to build custom OS's on. Look what microsoft have done with the tegra platform and CE 6.0 that they will be using in the Zune HD. This is what is possible when you have a team of software engineers who know what they are doing. The Zune HD's OS looks very fluid and

Obviously I am not expecting Meizu to be as skilled as microsoft but I think that Meizu have all the tools they need to create a good looking, fluid and functional OS they just don't have the expertise to implement it correctly at the moment.

Using a OS like android will just mean the M8 becomes less unique and will not really learn much in terms of developing OS's. Saying that though I suppose their is customisablitity on android as the Lenovo Ophone has shown. Still though I would prefer to see them make their own custom OS better as it does have great potential. Especially when you consider how difficult it is and how long it takes to make a solid fully custom phone OS, it would be wrong IMO to start putting precious R+D resources into something else like android.

BTW how can you tell that Android is better than WebOS??

As for Error's comment, they don't have to put any Google branding on the device nor the OS itself so Chinese people won't see the difference. I also don't get why the Google market would be a bad idea for Meizu. They would save lots of money because they wouldn't have to mantain their own app store and work on their own SDK.

If Meizu has the time, money and, most importantly, the human resources to devote to "investigating" Android, then why not? Given that MMobile isn't even a mature OS yet -what is it now- 2.5 years after the the announcement of the M8, it's difficult to justify on the face of things. On the other hand, Meizu is probably looking down the road a fair bit and, besides, they do have an advantage: their rabid fan base is, basically, an army of unpaid employees helping to debug and polish each firmware release. I really wish Meizu would lay out a road map instead of these little BBS tidbits from J Wong and e-mail snippets from their marketing department.

Why talking about Meizu's money, or you know their financial statement ? I didn't see any chinese companies bankrupt like amarican's.
