One more time -and I'm resisting the urge to use all caps- you cannot legally distribute & sell a mobile phone in China with WiFi. Can you distribute & sell a PSP, iPod Touch, laptop, or anything else with WiFi? Yes you can, because they're not mobile phones. It's all about protecting the revenue stream of the mobile carriers and about controlling how WiFi will be implemented.

Does that mean you cannot you buy a mobile phone with WiFi in China? Of course not. They're everywhere; you can buy one tomorrow at a mobile market in your town or online. Why? Because they're all grey market...like the reported half million iPhones shipped in from elsewhere.

Meizu is playing by the rules...well, almost if we believe that 2 versions are going to be available side-by-side. My goody-two-shoes half is still struggling with that since I have trouble believing everyone will just ignore the fact that Meizu is flouting the rules. Then again, Meizu is so small and the M8 such a proverbial drop in the bucket, no one may be paying any attention.

Also, the M8 is now listed for sale on Meizu's website, but no 16GB version. There's a button for for choosing 16GB, but it's not live.

What kind of relase date is this?!
The 18th feb is almost over in China!

Meizu should really take some communication lessons.
Of all other mobile devices I think this one really works smooth. Compare it with the samsung HD Oled.
Also the user interface is simple and clean (copy from Iphone).
Too bad no GPS and UMTS (HDSPA). Thats why im nog buying one (yet). Im afraid v2 will only be availble in 2010 because they will concentrate on the chinese market.

More than 2 years to develop a phone and still not having all the hardware implemented while others have. Thats a real shame.

So how do i differentiate from the wifi-chip phone and the non-wifi-chip phone from just looking at them?

I'm going to meet a dealer soon and I will only take if there's wifi.

My guess is to look for the blue sticker inside the battery compartment. If there is one then there is no wifi.

Also look for the word "demo unit" in Chinese on the box/box wrapping. If it's not there then there is no wifi on the M8.

If your dealer installed the M8 cracker for you run it and check the settings for wifi settings. If its not there theres no wifi.

Yay! M8 is out officially! It'll be interesting to see how the wifi pans out. And how 'soon' the next version comes out.

With other phones, it seemed like within 3 months a new one was out, and people were disappointed with not having the best of the best...such is life with technology.

Now, I'm just waiting for my phone carrier to finally catch up! Wait they did...they finally disabled analog and are digital now! (in select areas and plans?) I still have 1x and not the EV (ie 3G) on my phone for coverage....such is life living in a small town. Okay granted - I threw the flyer that came in the mail that explained what my cell phone company said they were doing...but I think I have the gist of it.

Anyways - at some point in the future I do hope to own a M8.

Meizu must still be working on the SDK since they probably wont release any FW that isnt supported by SDK since we have a thriwing app community, and no SDK means no support for the apps.

You have to admit, though, that wasn't much of a product launch...

-no 16GB
-no firmware update, not even a minor one
-no app store
-no announcement of further development plans

...in fact, just a 4-line announcement on their home page. OK, admittedly there's a link to 112 (!) pages of congratulations & discussion on their Chinese forum; still, for most of us this launch practically flew under the radar. You could almost imagine that with the M8 essentially on sale for a couple of weeks now (i.e. test units widely and easily available) and everyone exhausted from the development work, they just said "Aww heck, let's just announce it and get it over with".
