That not exactely how it works...
Its the phone that determines what frequencies are supported, not the carrier
Cingular is a US carries so probably uses 850/1900
Asia/Europe etc use 900/1800
some phones support just 900/1800, some 850/1900, some 3, some all 4
To be able to use a "foreign"phone in the US you have to make sure it supports the frequency thats used in the US..which is 850/1900
If the MiniOne is only released as a phone in China(900/1800) and they dont consider other frequencies it might not work in the US(but it will in Europe)
However, they might just be smart and make it so that it takes all 4 frequencies
Your friend that use import phones all have working phones because the phones are Quadbands(or tribands) that accept all frequencies...
make sure before buying a phone that it works with your local frequency

I'm kind of shocked they're not releasing the phone version for the U.S. Shocked and disappointed. A lot of people here are probably no strangers to importing phones to the U.S. Hopefully they will make the miniOne with U.S. and European frequencies as well. If they're smart they will. Instead of appealing to just the Chinese market they can appeal to the U.S. and Europe which is really good. But we just have to wait and see. Hopefully they will see that we want it in all four frequencies. ^_^

Dear Hendrik thank you for the answers.
As long as it has an english language support, I do not mind. (due to the absence of greek-hellenic language to every manual worldwide)

small correction
FYI 95% of Korean and Japanese phones do NOT have a SIM or any other kind of removable chip. They use CDMA-based networks (that are compatible with some Quad-band GSM phones) but your name, phone number and billing info are registered and linked to the phone the day you buy it (meaning you need a local ID etc.).
(the expensive 5% phones remaining are the ones that do have mix GSM-CDMA support for rich buisnessmen in need of global roaming)
So the question was not so dumb, I'm using a really cool phone out here in Korea and I was pissed the day I realized that it just wouldn't work anywhere but here.Last edited by Unregistered; 07-16-2007 at 06:12 AM.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsWhile this is true to s degree there ARE indeed GSM networks in these regions and they are growing!
Japan:

Korea (South I presume?)
http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_kr.shtml
Korea (But North also has GSM!)

While this is typically the case when attempting to use these Asia SPECIFIC phones OUTSIDE Asia, the other way around typically isn't a problem.
Yes Asia and Japan especially has a good number of great devices. This is my personal favorite as of right now:

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsH4g3N,
I suggest you educate yourself a little more about history, geography and economical systems prior to trying belittle someone like this because:
A) What exactly is 'Soviet Russia" there's never been anything like that, ever!
B) Soveitunion as such has been gone for close to TWO DECADES, that's longer than GSMs have been around. In fact there are adults that are born AFTER USSR no longer exsisted, I'm sure a number reading these forums are born after USSR no loner exsisted, FYI USSR = Sovietunion btw.
C) Russia is a capitalistic system, and far MORE capitalistic than Western Europe and North America, and as a matter of fact did you know that China is a economically capitalistic state?
D) Anything and everything was MANY MANY times cheaper in Sovietunion than it is in today's Russia.
It appears you have no comprehension at all what is capitalism!?

Thanked 0 Times in 0 Postsecsk2 he was just joking. The soviet Russia reference is one of those "In Soviet Russia" jokes.
e.g.:
In the US, you catch a cold.
In Soviet Russia, cold catches you!

Ah yes. I remember standing in a two block long line in Russia for that cheaper than cheaper than cheap (pick a meaning, any meaning) toilet paper. Oh yeah, everything was cheaper in Russia. Everything's still cheap in Russia, only now that artificial "cheapness" laws have been relaxed, all that "cheap" stuff is actually becoming more "AVAILABLE".
Supply - Demand. Yin - Yang. They go hand in hand, and their isn't a pointy-headed moron yet that has successfully tried to control one side of it, without having a natural response from the other side of the equation -- which just...doesn't...go...away.
Don't tell me about how cheap everything used to be in Russia. Any non-capitalistic moron can dictate low prices and profits. The trick is in getting any takers to actually BUILD and SUPPLY any modicum of quality for those artificially, pathetically low prices (which have NOTHING to do with actual market competitiveness in price).

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsObviously you have never stood in line for anything since you do not diferentiate between USSR and Russia, nor have the basic understanding of what people stood in line for, nor the fact "pick a meaning, any meaning" would not apply, not that I'm sure what you mean by this "meaning".
There is nothing that is cheap nor affordable in Russia of today, everything is expensive even on an international scale, Moscow is one of the most expensive cities to live in today in the world. The Russians today buy some 3/4 of the annual production of the most expensive MB SUV there is the G-wagen that is in the $100k price range!
In today's Russia there is a more extreme capitalism at work than any of the western hemisphere countries.
Exactly and the Russian consumer of today demand the VERY BEST.
Never did I say that something used to be cheap in Russia, you need to get your hisotry and geography clear
ANYONE who would've stood in line as you mentioned above who recieved all the way to university education without any cost, would have no issues with knowing these things
Again you don't even know how the socialistic system works do you, since you talk about profits just as any other capitalisitc point of view, you have missed the fundamentals of this "non-capitalistic" system as you refer to it as.
The largest capitalistic nation today really lacks products that have true quality. It appears you have something confused when you talk about artifically low prices as a matter of fact the largest nation with capitalism has quite a few such artificial low prices both on products and on such energy as gasoline, do your research and you will figure out why and how that is.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsSomeone complained about the prices and how "we" the consumer might be pressing prices down down etc (and where will it end as "we" all want profits for what we do) and then due to the person not being well informed that China is a capitalistic state (financially!) today started comparing things to USSR but calling it Russia.
