If it does't come with a contract, the price will go up. Don't you understand that? It's $199 on a contract because the company has to sell it for less than they buy it for, but they make the money back through their service fees.

The last comment is true. But you're still locked into a 2 year contract with a bad service carrier unless you pay the early termination fee.

Usually the price does go up by a good bit. The thing is though that it would be far less than if you got it on an AT&T contract. I reckon in Ireland, where I originate from(I currently reside in China), it will work out at about 400euro for the 8GB and 500/600euro for the 16GB. What I, and most others, am hoping is that Apple forces their word on every country in that the price will not be more than $200 worldwide. That's what Steve Jobbs said and here's hoping it's true.
In all honesty I am hoping the M8 comes soon. I like the Iphone and played with it and it blew me away.
But the M8 promised so much more. I am a general user who wouldn't use the web on my phone much at all. I am hoping to use it for music, video-on-the-go, as a phone(obviously) and hopefully as a PDA style device. Apple gives me most of that but at a cost and still lacks in some aspects of what I would want. On paper, the M8 gives me everything I need. But until i can see a proper working M8 and be given a solid release date I have to say that the iphone is a better choice as its out now, its a good phone and its build good.

more competition
seems like the meizu m8 would have a lot of competition now. there are so many touchscreen phones out in the market now, major competitor would be apple's Iphone 3g and the new Samsung i900. i was looking at the specs on that thing and it's awesome!!!!. if i don't hear any updates on the meizu m8 by the end of august i'mma head off and buy the Samsung i900.

"The iphone is free in the UK on certain contracts..."
"...free in the UK on certain contracts..."
"...on certain contracts..."
In other words its not free. You just end up paying for it with the long/overpriced contract that they rope you into. Not to mention the huge fee you are charged if your break the contract.

There is no need to get hysterical...
M8, iPhone and all the bunch of similar devices needs a contract... with the cell company to use such service... cell phone.
Each country has its own company offering such services to this devices and this local companies has its own type of contracts... depending on the market they are dealing with.
Why people is obsessed with this AT&T crap?... as far as I know this is an international company located in USA... and that contract is only for the people that lives in USA.
Does anybody knows how will be the contracts for this new iPhone 3G at $199... that will appear in most parts of the world in July 11th?.

You dont need a contract for m8!
You dont need a contract for m8! Have you ever heard of prepaid cards? Yeah no contract!

You don't need a contract. A lot of people like to use prepaid services because they don't want to break the bank with a 2 year contract.

Isn't this too dramatic?...

This tale of the cell contracts has started to sound to me as a the fairy tales that Apple told to make people to buy their average crap.
In my house we have a contract at 18-months for 5 cell phones which is less expensive than 5 prepaid cards according with the amount of minutes that the group uses.

Thanked 1 Time in 1 PostWell, fixed contracts are probably an advantage in some situations, but certainly not in most of them.
Here in Portugal, most carriers provide a service that only requires "charging up your account" with a minimum 20€ worth of calls every 2 months. That's 10€ per month, including free SMS for numbers in the same network, and a few other cool things. This is one of the most used "service plans" around here: everyone I know uses it.
Would it make any sense for me to pay an extra 40€ per month (assuming the iPhone contract is 50€) just to have the "honour" of owning an iPhone? You know, multiplying by 24 months that adds up to 960€ more than what I usually pay.. not to mention the cost of the device itself!
Now if I tell you that the minimum salary here is 426€, do you still think that SteveMB was being too dramatic?
Your case might be an exception, but for almost everyone the iPhone remains _very_ expensive, with or without contract. And those $199 are just a smokescreen: it's just like paying it with credit.

One simple question: how much it will cost monthly to use a M8 navigating the net and used as cell phone?
-
06-22-2008 #238
Do you mean browsing the net through your carrier and not Wi-Fi?
-
06-22-2008 #239
The cheapest... depending on the kind of service you have it can be less costly Wi-Fi... nowadays thru a cell phone service seems to have get low the prices... at least in my country.
The idea here is to make an evaluation how much it will cost to have a 2830 youen device vs. a US$ 199.- in a base of 18-months... no contract.
Users here seems to believe that a paid card for an M8 won't have costs

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsThe theory behind a contract is pretty simple:
If the amount of minutes you are calling on average each month is pretty close to a certain contract -> than that contract will be cheaper for you instead of prepaid. Cheapest contracts usually start at 150 minutes, if you're seriously only an occasional caller below this amount than prepaid will be much cheaper.
Do note custom iPhone contracts are more expensive than the "normal" ones because they usually include calling/sms/(unlimited) browsing alltogether. The second note is that browsing on your m8 off-contract will cost you, heavily. Prepaid prices for webbrowsing are rediculusly high in comparison to a data-plan.
If you are in need of a contract +dataplan anyway -> than you can finally compare iPhone+contract to m8+contract :D
In which the iPhone will be cheaper.Last edited by DusL; 06-22-2008 at 06:12 PM.
