The issue is not here what it looks like but what 3rd party software it will be compatible with and what not, there isn't much support out there right now for WinCE devices since its been close to dead for over a decade.

Yes I know but you also refer to WinCE5.0 and there is this other device (Compal UMD) I've been eyeing that is said to use WinCE5.0. Either way I fully agree it will be interesting to see the development, that having been said the big worry I have is the lack of support at this time from the 3rd part software scene for the WinCE platform

    Just because it's apple, pfft.
It might have similar capabilities but the actual functionality isn't the same. That is what apple does, they add very simple and enjoyable functionality to most of their devices. The way the iPhone automatically switches from landscape to portrait mode due to its sensor for example, and the transitioning between menus. Fancy transitions are not just eye candy. If done right they really add to the usability of a device by giving more natural feedback to an event. The iPhones web browser is looking extremely promising too.

Basically its about the package. You can do everything on a Windows PC that you can do on a mac, but I enjoy using the mac way more.

Windows CE 6.0 was released in Nov 2006 and as has already been pointed out in this thread there is no device out yet to run Windows CE 6.0 nor any to run Windows Mobile 7.0 (which is based on Windows CE 6.0)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Embedded_CE_6.0

Please don't confuse the BASED ON and RUNING. As well as do not confuse the WM5 / WM6 with WinCE 5.0 and WinCE 6.0

Just like VISTA and XP are BASED on NT but obviously not runing on NT as such:
    NT-based: NT 3.1 • NT 3.5 • NT 3.51 • NT 4.0 • 2000 • XP • Server 2003 • FLP • Vista

And contrary to what you state there is really very few 3rd part software that is intended for Windows CE (or HPC's) at this point, and they will have to catch up!
But there are a lot of people porting applications for Win CE based devices like GPS navigators, and they are able to run Windows Mobile aplications on these devices, see forums.

People? I am not talking about tweaks and hacks, yes that you can find for any device even the Sharp EM ONE I so like I can get a ''home made'' English OS for.

I am talking about 3rd party COMPANIES offering software!

And I'm talking that there are people that are making this "3rd party COMPANIES software" able to run on Win CE devices. Simply This.

It's so confusing when you say "there are people" as you are refering to some enthusiast website or something, yes there are SOME WinCE program support but VERY limited, also when you build an UI on the WinCE basis it more or less becomes a custom setup on which NOT all "generally made" software out there will work.

Can you show some examples of what softwares you are regfering to please?

    Guys,

    Chill out!

At this stage there is no final spec and no actual phone - all things can change.

Let's at least wait until we have an actual product before we squable about specs!

I'm talking about WinCE regardless if the Meizu has it or not if they were to change the OS now they'd have to change the whole device more or less.

Take a look at TomTom or Igo dedicated GPS forums, programmers made some soft to play music, movies and run aplicattions designed for WM.

Windows Mobile software will *NOT* work on the Meizu since its not running Windows Mobile. Its running Windows CE !

Yes there's plenty of software for WM, but that really *IS* the point that there's plenty of software for mobile devices runing windows (WM5/WM6) but NOT hardly anything for WinCE.

So the question was, please show us what software you are refering to that would work on the Meizu, hence WindowsCE programs.

there's a pretty good library there, granted there are a lot of older apps.

Also Windows CE embedded shared source is available to download
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/embedded/aa714518.aspx

it shouldn't be too hard to develop for if there was a dedicated community.

so if you actually go in under any of the sub categories you will find that these are all made for the HPC's thats Hand Held PC
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handheld_PC

That were runing the old WinCE
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_CE

Really not much in common with the new devices and unlike a PC that would perhaps be runing Win98 that you could install WinXP on, these devices are not compatible with each other when it comes to OS and hence 3rd party software.

If you look quickly at the dates of those programs at tucows you will see that they are from mid to somewhat late 90's! How many of us were using Windows Pocket devices then? Mine was called HP Jornada 680

Yes very true, and it was released in NOV 2006 and it is hopefully catching on, but due to the lack of a dedicated community and frankly ANY device that runs this OS on the market at this time, the possibility to get 3rd party software for the Meizu M8 to begin with at least will be as hard as getting such for the iPhone (if it will ever be possible for the iPhone...)

Please do NOT get me wrong though, I am NOT here to rant, on the contrary I have in the past week learned myself what this WinCE 6.0 means to any of us that might want to get the Meizu M8, and while I appreciate the possibilites it might open up to getting "fancy" features from an UI standpoint I also feel extremely dissapointed that I will not even if I had the Meizu M8 in my hand at this time, be able to do many things I so much need, for instance Skype. Just as an example go and look at what you can get for Symbian and what you can get for Windows Mobile (even WM5 and WM6 that are relatively new compared to Symbian as such) then look at the firgures of Symbian vs. Windows Mobile devices:

That's about FIVE times the number of Symbian users as there is Windows Mobile, yet you can not get Skype to install on your Symbian device, you can not stream a Windows Stream on a Symbian device, the so popular Coreplayer is still in "COMING SOON" status (and have been so for a long time!) for the Symbian devices http://coreplayer.com/index.php?opti...d=15&Itemid=29

So all in all, don't expect to see all to many compatible devices for the Meizu M8, I also want to quote what one developer told me when I asked them if they would consider developing software for the "new" WinCE 6.0 platform:

"...that essentially "becomes" part of the operating system on a given device"

BTW here is a history lineup of the WinCE family:
    http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/windowsce/

Please click on the WinCE 5.0 before you draw the conclusion that they are one and the same

See one of the things that Windows for your laptop/desktop is good about is backwards compatibility (usually) meaning your older program(s) will work on newer generation of OS' (usually) but that is also the "baggage" that makes Windows relatively slow, the Windows Mobile platform is not compatible that way for good (faster) and bad (need software specifically for YOUR OS).

Sorry for this LONG post, but hopefully someone will find something useful from it

Hey guys it's been a while since I posted. ^_^

I'm really looking forward to this photo release. Hopefully the Meizu M8 will be coming out soon. As long as the M8 comes out before Christmas I'll have something to ask for this year.

All the guys i work with are up in arms about the iphone release this weekend. One even went as far as to sell his motorcycle so he would have the money to buy it. I dunno I'm a fan of certain companys, but 600$ for a phone is still... and to sell my mode of transportation to buy a phone... Told them about the miniOne and they were like.. yeah but its not APPLE. I just laughed
