how is win CE 6.0 outdated? It is microsofts most recent Windows Embedded Operating System, for mobile devices, consumer electronics etc. Windows Mobile 6 is powered by Windows CE 5.0. Windows CE 6.0 will be the basis for windows mobile 7 which is yet to be released. The COWON Q5 pmp runs on WIN ce 5.0, I know of no pmp or dap to date that has even started using Win CE 6.0.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_CE_6.0
Windows CE 6.0 serves as the foundation framework which enables the creation of a custom GUI /platform that Meizu or any other company using it can tailor specifically to the needs of their hardware. Perhaps Meizu could have adopted a linux or a symbian based OS but at the end of the day are they really better operating systems? It all comes down to opinion and user preference. Win Ce has been used in mobile devices as long as or perhaps even longer than any other mobile OS meaning they have had a lot longer to refine it. We will have to see about 3rd party apps, i'm hoping that the m8 will be able to act as a host for an external hardrive too. Once both the m8 and the Iphone have dropped and the hackers come out to play who knows we may one day see a hacked meizu m8 running OSX! seems unlikley though. I personally don't think using win CE 6.0 is a bad move at all

Forgive my ignorance on this CE topic, Im still catching up on it, my last experience with CE was back in the mid/late 90's with what I guess was the WinCE 5.0 with last release date of 1994
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_CE_5.0
And by the table at the bottom of wiki I was just assuming they were in order, meaning WinCE 5.0 / WinCE 6.0 and THEN the MOBILE versions, thinking the CE 6.0 was older than all the Mobile versions. Sorry about that!
Thank you for clearing that up btw! Seems the CE name as such is getting revived?
Also at the same time as talking about the Meizu, Ive been talking about the COMPAL UMD that is said to be runing WinCE 5.0 (also a device not released yet..)

I have an HTC Hermes, a PDA-Phone managed by windows mobile 6 (based on Win CE 6), and despite I don't like M$, I'm proud to say that is the best plattform M8's can use, because you have a lot of third-part software and everyone is able to make its own progran using ce framework or visual ce, if you don't belive try xda-developers.
The only thing that you have to have in your device is a big amount of RAM and a good processor ando co-processor. For example, I have 64 megs of RAM an a Samsung 400 Mhz processor and i wasn't able to run the iphone's theme showed on previos post smoothly.
But I'm waiting to M8's to be my next phone because I think it will be the most complete device on the market.

Your HTC Hermes runs Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6.0 both based on Windows CE 5.0 which had its latest release in 1994.
Windows CE 6.0 was released in Nov 2006 and as has already been pointed out in this thread there is no device out yet to run Windows CE 6.0 nor any to run Windows Mobile 7.0 (which is based on Windows CE 6.0)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Embedded_CE_6.0
Please don't confuse the BASED ON and RUNING. As well as do not confuse the WM5 / WM6 with WinCE 5.0 and WinCE 6.0
Just like VISTA and XP are BASED on NT but obviously not runing on NT as such:
NT-based: NT 3.1 • NT 3.5 • NT 3.51 • NT 4.0 • 2000 • XP • Server 2003 • FLP • Vista
And contrary to what you state there is really very few 3rd part software that is intended for Windows CE (or HPC's) at this point, and they will have to catch up!

i guess it depends on what meizu can do for the menus and the 3rd party programmes.
judging from the m6 they will make a very good looking and easy to use interface, i just hope they can pack more software in than apple has with the iphone, maybe they could make an msn messenger which utilizes the 3g camera, or put photo editing software on there.

What do you mean by "do for the menus"?
Meizu wouldn't be doing anything "for" the 3rd part software...!?

The music players are runing their own software (or at least not Microsoft Based ones), so they are really limited to whatever you can do with MS, now theo good side of that is there is a GOOD AMOUNT of 3rd party software for Microsoft Windows Mobile, but since this is to run WinCE 6.0 it is a big question if you can find any 3rd party software at the time of release that will be of interet.
For instance there is no Skype support nor Opera browser support currently for WinCE ! Two of the main reasons I want/need a MS based device.

I'm a little dubious about a Windows CE6 phone as I found this information from www.windowsfordevices.com
Asked whether these newly added cellular technologies might allow companies to create mobile phones based on Windows CE, Ghangurde pointed out that a large number of phone-oriented functions would be required to implement a mobile phone, such as a phone UI (user interface), dialer, connection manager, and APIs for controlling communications functions. Besides, he noted, Microsoft has a separate product that delivers that capability: Windows Mobile.
Mind you, it is possible as apparently Intrinsyc Software has developed software for creation of mobile phone interface for Windows CE5. http://www.windowsfordevices.com/news/NS7100035934.html
It will be interesting to see the development.

software for creation of mobile phone interface for Windows CE5.
It will be interesting to see the development.
But WinCE5.0 and WinCE6.0 are more than 10 years apart, WinCE5.0 latest version came in 1994, and WinCE6.0 was released Nov 2006.

In fact Opera Mini is Windows Mobile Smartphone (non touchscreen) edition!
Opera Mobile (used in the HTC Touch is also NOT compatible with the Meizu M8!)

Nor Mini is suitable for Windows CE 6.0 !
Once again please do NOT confuse these two:
Windows CE 6.0 (which Windows Mobile 7.0 will be BASED on):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Embedded_CE_6.0
and
Windows Mobile (5.0 and) 6.0 (which is BASED on Windows CE 5.0):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Mobile

Just to be clear this is what Windows Mobile 5.0/6.0 are based on
Windows CE 5.0:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_CE_5.0
Just as WinXP and Vista are based on WinNT and Win98 based on DOS, a program written for Win98 will not run under MS-DOS, one written for VISTA (specifically) would most likely not run on NT.

As a side note the user inteface you see on the HTC touch is not that uncommon its been out for a while:
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/prod...obileshell/?en
And as for the Opera Mobile I use that daily on my Dell PDA.

Actually I was refering to Windows CE6. The article the quote is from is about the new features in CE6. Link to the article is here.
