Lithium Battery FAQ & Care Tips

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding lithium batteries in general, which is why I have written this post in an attempt to clear some common misconceptions. The information is gathered, edited and taken from the Battery University, a trusted and knowledgeable source for battery information. Please do not repost my compilation and edits of the information, rather do it yourself or link to this post. Thank you and I hope that this information will provide value to you.

Meizu M8 and Meizu M6 – Lithium Battery FAQ & Care Tips

There is only one way to charge lithium-based batteries. Charge the battery often. The battery lasts longer with partial rather than full discharges.

Lithium-ion is a very clean system and does not need priming as nickel-based batteries do. The 1st charge is no different to the 5th or the 50th charge. Stickers instructing to charge the battery for 8 hours or more for the first time may be a leftover from the nickel battery days (ignorance).

Unlike nickel and lead-based batteries, a new lithium-ion pack does not need cycling through charging and discharging. Priming will make little difference because the maximum capacity of lithium-ion is available right from the beginning. Neither does a full discharge improve the capacity of a faded pack, avoid full cycle because of wear. 80% depth-of-discharge recommended. Recharge more often. However, a full discharge/charge will reset the digital circuit of a 'smart' battery to improve the state-of-charge estimation (make battery indicator more accurate).

How should I prepare my new battery?
Li-ion comes partially charged. You can use the battery right away and charge it when needed.

Can I damage my battery if incorrectly prepared?
No; Li-ion is forgiving to partial and full charge. No priming is needed when new. Loses capacity due to aging whether used or not.

How do I prepare a battery with charge indication?
Fully charge and discharge battery once every 30 charges or so. Repeat when readings get inaccurate.

Should I use up all battery energy before charging?
No, it is better to recharge more often; avoid frequent full discharges. On batteries with a fuel gauge, allow a full discharge once a month to enable reset

Should I charge my battery partially or fully?
Does not matter. Charging in stages is acceptable. Full charge termination occurs by reading the voltage level and charge current. Charging a full battery is safe and does not cause harm.

Should I remove the battery from the charger when full?
It does not matter. The charger automatically cuts the charge current when the battery is full. A laptop may be connected to the AC when not in use.

I was afraid to harm my battery because I couldn't charge it fully when I received my miniplayer... I fully discharged it every time I could... I ever avoid to do little chargings...

... So was I wrong to do it !

I wonder why every electric appliance manufacturer who's product contains a Li-ion battery tells its clients to overcharge it in the beginning. It is something stated in every manual, will Meizu be the first one to break the trend? Certainly hope so!

Of course. Just let it play songs or video's, or just have it on. as easy as that

Thanks for the useful infos....the battery playtime already exceed what ipod has offered. now I dont hv to re-charge almost every other day like i did with my my ex-ipod nano. how long do u think the lifespan will last for meizu....1 - 2 yrs. ?

ahhh thank you for the info. i always thought i should evercharge the 1st time or the battery will have shorter life. i also thought that if you charge when its full it will damage the battery. and i even thought that i should charge as little as possible. thanks for the great info.

Is my Meizu M6 SL lithium battery user replaceable :d ?

If so how much is the replacement battery ? And where can i buy it ?

I find many people neglect finding out about this, in this age of society where we make disposable items with very short life spans.... mass produce stuff that wear and tear and are disposed compared with the good old quality master craftmanship of old :x

I recall the Ipods having the fans complain about the cost to replace their Lithium batteries, so i wonder where does Meizu M6 stand on this :x ?

If it was already mentioned in some other post elsewhere i apologise upfront for my ignorance. But seeing as this is a pinned thread about the battery, maybe this should be mentioned here as well :x my 2 cents.

Looking at GMP3’s video previews of the M6 and D2 from, we wonder anew why people keep trooping to Apple stores for an iPod. On that note, we’ve also included a video review of the M6 by AnythingButiPod. They had a pretty comprehensive look at the user interface. Simple, but you know it’ll last longer than 1.5 years.

Most of these "rules and tips" applies to the old type of batteries, that's probably why they've added it to the new ones as well (in the manual). Alternatively to have something to complain about when you want to return a defect product?

Omg and here is me fully discharging and fully loading it every time..
I have it since juli this year and today it was fully loaded: started listening @ 18.30, now it is 23.08 and the battery indicator shows that it is empty already. I just cant get 20 hours out of it :S Anything I can do?
It's empty now 18.30>23.17 isnt good.

Try leaving it for a night. If that doesn't work, fully discharge it, and recharge.

Nice FAQ and it's all true. The only thing you don't explain is how Li-ion batteries do wear. They indeed don't wear becasue of charging and/or discharging, they wear over time. A greater temperatures makes tee battery go bad faster. That's why it's advised not to charge laptop accu's while working on the laptop (working = heat = battery killing). When you don't use a Li-ion battery for while, you best keep it in the fridge.
