Really good find!
I know that this is completely off-topic, but mbarry, I had a comment about your sig... In the "My Quotes", you have a quote stating that "Anyone can acheive the impossible, given the time and the right tools." That doesn't make much sense. Nobody can acheive the impossible. If something is impossible, it cannot be acheived. If it is able to be acheived, it is no longer impossible.

The CNMO teardown was already posted in the review section on the front page; check there first to avoid overlapping threads.
BTW, since even major tech sites in China are notoriously bad about linking to original content, here's the link to CNMO's disassembly page (with some higher-res photos, if interested):
17???+???? ??M8?????? -?????-????
The CNMO reviewer didn't bother ID'ing the M8's audio codec; it's a Wolfson WM8753.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsHm, I'm not sure what I should think about the DAC... doesn't look like a very high end chip, it's even used in some navigation systems! I'd rather have something like an AKM... the Wolfson appears to be rather ordinary. We'll have to try it though... but I'm sceptical.

Thanked 1,049 Times in 391 PostsThe M6SL has a Wolfson DAC too, and the sound quality is very good. The M8 should have a newer chip I guess.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsI know all of that, but the specs don't appear to be that good (ok, that's not so important), it just doesn't seem to be a high end/top of the range chip. Ok, maybe top of the range, they only seem to have like 2 codecs? My sound card uses a Wolfson DAC, but a quite expensive one, and for the latest (and probably best) model they are using a AKM DAC which is also used in better HiFi equipment and professional audio devices. Something like that would be cool, if only for the bragging rights
But lets hope Mr. Wong tested many codecs and has choosen the best one. Would be nice to have something that plays 24bit 96kHz data though... I have a few albums in that quality.

Wolfson DAC are Very good. Any of you guys check out this thread yet? I did it for my 80 Gigger, and the SQ has improved immensely:The Apple diyMod: My Take on the Famous iMod [56k killer] Featuring 3G, 4G, 5G and nano 1G! - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio
You bypass the crappy components to get audio straight from the DAC.If you are having trouble with your player, please visit this thread first and try the steps before you panic. Most likely you will be able to fix your player easily using the steps listed.

Wolfson are not the be-all-end-all of audio. They offer a full range of products from high to lower end. It's true that the WM8753, on paper, doesn't have mind-blowing specifications; then again, neither does the WM8987 used in the M6, M3 and a whole bunch of other Chinese players. An expensive chip can sound crappy and low end codec can sound pretty decent; a lot of it depends on how they're implemented in the device. There's a lot of other factors to consider: signal path/circuit design/output stage, shielding/isolation, etc. etc.
He probably chose based on 4 reasons:But lets hope Mr. Wong tested many codecs and has choosen the best one.
1. Meizu has a working relationship with Wolfson.
2. The sound signature would be similar to previous Meizu/Wolfson products.
3. The WM8753 integrates audio, voice, headset/speaker on one chip.
4. Price.Last edited by chengdude; 12-06-2008 at 12:52 AM.

BTW: Head-Fi is sometimes just too absurdly tweako for words.
