Thanked 1 Time in 1 PostI think the reviewers are interpreting the brightness "issue" the wrong way... in fact the M8 screen looks to be the best at reproducing the colour black (a common problem in LCD screens). For example, the i900 and the TouchDiamond screens make black look grey, and are far behind the M8 IMO.
The iPhone is the only rival to the M8 in this comparison, since it manages to be brighter while preserving the black color at the same time.
Maybe they should increase the max brightness a bit in the M8 firmware like JW said, just to give users a broader choice, but the current setting already looks great IMO.

Are we going to be able to get our hands on the "test unit"? Or will it solely go to "VIP"? I would love to get one of these test units if it is in anyway possible.

Thanked 1,024 Times in 375 PostsI think we don't have any chance buying one of those early "test units". Some Meizu stores have been taking deposits already, so I guess, they will sell out in a day or so...

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsUnder dark lighting conditions like that, the M8 probably scales back brightness. My Moto Q9H does that with a light sensor as well, it's easier on the eyes and saves batteries!

M8 has great color contrast, but the screen is too dark. In the second photo the mouths are indistinguishable.
I know some relatives that live in China and will come over later this month. If they can get a hold of a test unit I can post a review (if the contract lets me).Last edited by Blah; 12-04-2008 at 11:42 PM.

12-05-2008 #70This strikes me as equally naive. "Unbelievably stupid" comparisons? Why? It seems like a pretty fair comparison to me. How about this comparison: No iPhone = No M8. Do you really believe Meizu and "technology maverick" Jack Wong could have built the M8 without the iPhone as a road map?? Please. Comparisons and complaints are inevitable: it took 2 years, after all and still the UI bears an uncanny (if not 1:1) resemblance to you-know-what. Jack Wong is no technology maverick; he's a sharp businessman with an equally sharp understanding of his marketplace. Judging from his products, he's got an eye for style and judging from his emails he seems like a guy you'd want to have a beer with, which alone raises him above Steve Jobs. But a maverick? How? Name one innovation Meizu has brought to the marketplace. Name one groundbreaking , paradigm-shifting technology Meizu has pioneered, perfected, or otherwise made consumer friendly. The history of Meizu is a history of being "inspired" by other products: Take a look at early Meizu players and check out the similarities to contemporary Cowon & iRiver products. Then we evolved to the M6 & M3 and, well, that's been done to death already. Now we're at the M8 and where are we? Still "inspired", no? But that's all OK because, behind the curve or not, Meizu does it better than any other Chinese manufacturer, always adding useful stuff, using high quality materials, and otherwise improving the user experience. The one "maverick" move I give Jack Wong big props for is using the M8 to change the direction of Meizu and keep it from dying off as the MP4 market slowly devolves into one big "meh".People need to stop being naive, look at the facts and undestand that the odds of meizu suceeding in this unbeliavably demanding project have always been stacked against them. The fact they have come so far and produced anything that can even stand next to an iphone and hold its own shows that IMO Wong has the great determination and unremitting will to suceed that many great technology mavericks have all had.
And the next step? That's where I'm hoping Jack Wong finally lets go, leaving behind the inspirations and allowing his team to come up with something Meizu can really call their own. They've got the brains and talent...need to work on the planning & organization, though
But for now, don't berate people or otherwise moan about unfair comparisons; sorry, Meizu asked for it.

BTW, yeah, great color contrast but the screen is way too dark; it's losing details in the shadows. It also looks like there's way too much blue...can you set the white balance or color temperature like on cameras & TVs?

Well....perhaps I could have phrased it better as it has become misconstrued. I don't mean that comparing the 2 phones is stupid...obviously it was bound to happen, by stupid comparisons I meant that comparing the M8 to the iphone and expecting the M8 to run anywhere near as well or be as polished as the iphone at this very early stage is stupid and very Naive. As I explained in the original post...apple has a much bigger team, more resources, more expertise, have implemeted a whole heap of FW upgrades, are on their 2nd gen model etc etc etc.
I did not say that J.Wong was Maverick either I said he 'has the great determination and unremitting will to suceed that many great technology mavericks have all had'. Meaning he had great determination and will similar to what many technology mavericks have had. I never said Wong came out with any 'groundbreaking , paradigm-shifting technology'.
Of course I am well aware Meizu's history is one of making 'inspired' products. And I too hope they will transcend this phase of imitation, as many japenese and korean companies did during the 1980's and become innovators in their own right.
However this does not take away from the fact that the task at hand was very difficult and that building a completely custom OS and piece of complex hardware when you are a relatively small mp4 players manufacturer with little or no experience of coding mobile OS's or making high end cell phones, is a great achievement. They have built what looks to be a phone that can rival some of the best handsets on the market, after only 2 years of phone development and no previous experience!
Not to mention the fact that no one has even made a cell phone built on Win Ce 6.0. This is one aspect where they are pioneers so much so that apperently they will be helping microsoft with the development of Win Ce 7.0. The M8 will be also one of very few that can decode full Dvd res video.
I was just trying to show people that what meizu has achieved is already pretty incredible and they should not expect the M8 to be able to rival a ground breaking device like the iphone at this early stage.Last edited by sere83; 12-05-2008 at 03:18 AM.

All very true sere83, and I know we're all on the same page; nevertheless I still hate Meizu for not doing more to differentiate the UI/menus. That effort alone could have spared much of these debates and shut up all the iSheep.

For a company like Meizu, the M8 is an incredible achievement.
How did Japanese technology reach the top? Copying the technology of other countries played a big part. This is just the way things are ~ Humans learn by imitation.
Perhaps innovation can begin when you are at the top and there's nothing left to imitate.

As they say, imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

is SOOOOO true - its just amazing! For a company like Meizu, the M8 is an incredible achievement
long live Meizu and long live Mr Wong !!!!!!!!!!!!
Jack Wong is 1/2 the reason i stick with Meizu's products
if i won the lottery 2moro - i know what company im gonna be investing in!!!

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsMake the production of one product cheaper is a technological improvement. And very important.
I think that Meizu "innovates" with their M6: too much cheaper than other similar devices.
People always forget the production process. Optimizing the production and reducing the costs are as important as a new usefulness and functions.
So far, China optimizes the production reducing employee's wage, and reducing the product quality.
I think Meizu is defined like a "a chinese quality brand". M6 is very robusted and has very quality, is cheap, and I think Meizu workers are very glad to work there.
Greets!
