    Meizu M8 Handwriting Recognition?

Does the M8 support handwriting recognition? Either English or Chinese characters. I saw for Chinese the testers used 'pinyin' method, but no scribbling via stylus/finger.

Can one disable the shutter sound when taking pictures? And how to zoom in on object before taking picure?

as one of the reviews said, there's not handwriting recognition, since the screen is made with capacitive technology, and only responses to fingertaps (not to stylus or any other object). this has advantages (no need to lock the screen when in your pocket) and disadvantages (no handwriting). like on the iphone, handwrtiting is possible, but you really have to use your hand literally, which is not that good i think.

why would you wanna zoom on some object? it has not optical zoom feature (like almost all other phones), so if you try to digitally zoom onto something the picture quality will suffer (again, like on all other phones without optical zoom)

Well, as I am in China, I do try and write the Chinese characters to help practice and remember the characters that I studied before. Since it only responds to fingertaps, no chance of graffiti writing either.

Zoom - that is because sometimes you want to take picture of something that is not so close to you.

yeah, i can understand your point there, i's also like to do that, but guess i have to stick with my 步步高... anyway, you can still probably can use graffity, but it's not as delicate as with stylus.

zoom: but it's not optical zoom! if you use the zoom function in an imaging device, that has no zoom lens, then it is exactly equal to pressing the "+" button to zoom in when viewing that pic on you computer.

Execpt that a program, for example Photoshop, is way better at resizing pictures then a phone is. You will generally have a better quality when you just take the picture and zoom in using Photoshop.

I guess we'll be able to disable the shutter sound. If not, we just remove the sound file from the firmware I guess.

Not on every phone. My SE s500i for example does it anyway. Even if you turn it to silent mode, the darned thing still does the shutter sound.

LOL? Wow! I never knew. I would have thought that even in the worst case, you could just turn your phone on silent. That must be pretty annoying sometimes MartijnGP, especially when you want to take pictures secretly.

Can confirm MarijnGP's statement; once upon a time I used a Motorola A1200, the camera shutter sound was very loud and there was no way to disable it.
Can't wait to play with the Meizu MX!

This might be the M8's Achilles Heel. As folks posting from China already know, the overwhelming majority of mobile users are accustomed to predictive text input via keypad. You can't underestimate the importance of input method as one look (and one listen to the constant beep-beep of new message alerts) at the millions of texting zombies glued to their mobile screens will tell you. An all-touchscreen interface may turn off a lot of potential buyers.

Useful, gimmicky, or whatever your opinion, the iPhone 3G supports handwriting input natively as well as through 3rd party apps. Hopefully, the same will eventually be true for the M8.

Don't you consider pinyin using soft keyboard predictive text? Or what do you mean? I'm hoping to use the M8 for plecodict, what are my chances?

Yeah, not so clear I guess. I just meant that an all-touchscreen device might be off-putting to many new, hesitant, or otherwise stuck-in-their-ways customers. I know a few Chinese Dopod users who aren't that happy with a full touchscreen device and prefer text entry via the typical small keypad...it's faster for them.

The M8 is based on Windows CE...does PlecoDict run on that? I've only seen it on Palms and once on a WinMo smartphone.

Chengdude: My wife has been using a samsung w569 for almost a year now. That has a touch screen but also a normal keypad. Sine she started using the touch screen to handwrite messages, she has never gone back to using a keypad. I am hoping that the M8 will be able to adopt some app that will cater for this as I know she would love to be able to carry over wring messages in the same way.

My point is that she is Chinese but adapted to using a touch screen quickly and likes it.

Noone knows I guess. The've stopped developing for Palm OS and are all for PPC devices these days.

handwriting character is just a software, they can develop it with new firmware update or third party software running on M8 ,no problem

Well, is it really? Capacitive vs. Resistive technology. Which has higher resolution? I'm sure capacitive is enough to write one character on the screen, but is it enough for messages?

I was more concerned with writing chinese characters. But Swype looks awsome.
