Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post@sere83:
I don't think the accelerometer is at risk. IMO JW is talking about a different issue: fitting video image with different sizes/aspect ratios. The accelerometer doesn't have much use for that, it's more appropriate to change the screen orientation.
Regarding TV-Out and OTG, those are really big losses. I was counting on using the M8 as a bridge between my external HD and my TV, and now that possibility is gone...
The 30% fee for sold software is indeed alot, and it does bring Apple to mind, but I have to confess that it wasn't my biggest gripe with the iPhone development scheme... hopefully, the M8 SDK will be alot more open, and anyone will be able to get examples and tutorials on the web.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsIndeed...But AFAIK wifi is to be activated only outside China, as it is currently forbidden in mainland china - to help promote the chinese equivalent, which should be ready in 1-2 years? Because it is difficult to monitor, leading to the possibility of completely bypassing government censorship/spying? who knows...
So if Meizu count on wifi for software download...and it is forbidden in china, they get in trouble in their main market? Or do they intend to be big abroad? In that case why the delay on international availability, and on western localizations?
Anyway, Wong himself has said that wifi is not activated by default, it is present in hardware but need an OS patch to work, and, as far as I understand, this patch will not be proposed in China for the time being (it need a law change to be legal).
So officially exported m8 will have wifi I guess, but grey market ones exported from China, well, for those there are strong reasons to get worried ;-) And there is no info about release date for abroad, certainly not in 2008 imho.
The more I think about it, the more troubles I see for the m8, given the last news...Last edited by gkai; 10-09-2008 at 03:50 PM.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 Postsvery dissapointing...
No USB OTG
No TV out
No GPS
No it cannot run smoothly at 720*480 size
( why bother to have 720*480 resolution in the first place?)
Yes to price increase for 8gb from 2080rmb to 2380rmb
yes test unit will have only 2mb/s which is so dam slow compare to iphone
Yes after M8, they will develop a 3000++rmb 3G version and will have all function ( But according to my personal opinion it wont happen for the next 10 years since they didnt even released the first version of M8. And yet they talk about the 3g version of M8 wtf???)
Unsure if they still have wifi
Im very diasspointing at M8 product and their spec list is getting shorter and the price is getting up higher. Instead to wait for another 2 years for this crap. Im going to buy an iphone bye bye all.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsI was thinking about that too..and also use the m8 as a viewer for hd movies straight out my camera. No bridge needed, the camera itself has usb OTG and can upload to an HDD, but the ability to read/manage movies on the HD, and view them with a nice screen without a laptop would have been nice....
And also use large USB keys as extra storage...
and cheap foldable keyboards, or scanners for specific applications...
Yep, OTG is a huge loss, more so than TV out imho....

Thanked 91 Times in 32 Postsu are correct ..
China telekom authorities required WIFI hardware not presend on phone not only on software. so JW use driver/firmware to hide the WIFI is not legel , and risky, if JW take out the WIFI chip from M8, that will not fair to M8 use if one day china allow WIFI in mobilephone (news say possible other 6 month time), and without WIFI will affacted alot M8 design as Mobile internet platfrom , affacted form WIFI , M8 is use nanoradio WIFI module which WIFI & Bluetooth in single chip, so if take out WIFI module also take out Bluetooth funtion ...
so this is very hard CHALLENGE for JW how solve the problem.
one quite good solution is M8 launch out side China...Last edited by waja2000; 10-09-2008 at 04:33 PM.

Thanked 1,024 Times in 375 PostsI got a little worried after reading these things about wifi in china... How JW plans to hide it they don't even allow the hardware itself?

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsCould be launched in HK, yes...In that case count on having M8 available almost immediately in Europe, in UK more specifically...HK import is huge!
Also, I guess that if Meizu plans a HK launch, m8 will have chinese (and/or simplified chinese) and english from day 1. I know HK a little bit, and I have big trouble imagining a phone launched there without supporting both chinese and english, chinese only would flop big time ;-)
Maybe it (HK-launch) is the only way out of this trap, I now am pretty sure that Meizu is strugling for its life with the m8 development, and the fight is far far from being winned yet...
Still no OTG is a huge blow
I can not understand how JW try to downplay it as if 16GB onboard would make this feature useless...

Thanked 1 Time in 1 PostAccording to JW's posts, it seems that the trouble with OTG is that it would require the M8 to supply a 5v power to the USB device. For example, some external HDs (that don't need a powerbrick) get their power though the USB cable. This is of course hard to do with the M8, since it would drain the battery in no time... but is the +5V output really necessary everytime? Even for USB devices that have their own powerbrick?

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsIndeed: Almost all portable devices that have USB-OTG can not power external devices, the power requirement of USB is not fullfilled by portable devices (even laptops sometimes have troubles).
But it should be ok once you add external power supply to the HDD (my camera work exactly like that: not able to power a small external hdd (which is usb-powered on laptops), but working fine once I plug the optional HHD external power).
For usb key or keyboard, which use virtually no power, it should be ok...
I have a 2 year old PDA that is USB-OTG, so there is no big technological feat behind it - Meizu has just cutted one more corner...

maybe we can reenable OTG through SDK software?
Or did JW change the hardware for it completely
