Before the policy does not permit, m8 listed we will not provide wifi-driven until the licensing policy when we provide adequate support for the wifi.

Yeah, I read that but it doesn't make much sense to me... Something about hiding the wifi until they get the license...? Or what?

I think they have to have a license to use Wi-Fi in China, and they'll just use Dane-Elec's idea of custom firmware that hides the FM Radio to lower prices (some type of radio tax in Europe?)

Seems yes. Generally, if you are going to sell some device which works using wireless transmission it should get a license (certificate) from appropriate govermental structure (which is monitoring usage of all radio frequences). But usually it is rather formal procedure than something very hard. Maybe in China it is different? Ok, I agree, we really need someone who can explain why it is big problem to use wi-fi in China.

Actcually JW say most late until end of November, if not they( meizu) will distribute large quantity of M8 use as a test unit 。(full funtion unit with WIFI)

and JW also say due to China telecom authorites still not allot mobilephone with WIFI built-IN, so in official M8 unit we(meizu) will not provide WIFI driver until the telecom authorites allow WIFI in mobilephone. and telecom authorites also take time to process and testing the phone before approval, usually for new phone manufacture it possible take 3~6 month to get aprroval.

look like M8 is ready just have some other company external issue, possible on Network Access License from telecom authorites and take long time process license by telecom authorites.

    update 8/10/08
JW inform in BBS, other problem facing is performance issue on Samsung MoviNAND wich only able to write 2MB/s, they just getting new supply versin of MoviNAND after testing getting 4.6MB/s. and Samsung only able supply 6MB/s write speed MoviNAND next year 2nd quarter

actully issue in china is, they dont want use west country technology as their standard, because of that they beliave if they use western country technology with will control by west.

That why not allow WIFI in mobilephone except laptop and few other item like WIFI router. and actually china develop own Wireless network call WAPI (WLAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure) is a Chinese National Standard for Wireless LAN. but WAPI standard is delay 2~3 year a go until now due to WAPI become top country leader issue, some news say few country force china to top/delay WAPI, so china no choice and ban WIFI on mobilephone.

Same like issue 3G in china, still no 3G in china, , they come out own TD-SCDMA standard (if not wrong). but still in testing level in few city.

and other issue is ,if allow WIFI at mobilephone it may cause income impact for china mobile carrier, people will use VOIP like Skype ,MSN ,QQ to comunicate to voide the phone bill charges. and Mobile carrier is national main telco company. and have link to gorverment.

Meh, unlocked iPhone 3Gs are selling there for around 1000USD, I don't see them killing Wi-Fi on that...

One more thing about those integrated speakers... They should be LOUD and CLEAR because I really often miss my calls because I cant hear it. I dont always have the phone next to me. Of course there can be a problem when someone is "blasting" their mobile on crowded place... but that is just so stupid...

That's because iPhones aren't officially distributed there. They are imported.

So? They don't care about them, why should they care about the M8 having Wi-Fi or not?

Of course they care about it... but since the iPhone is not officially sold (read: it's sold illegally/through the black market), how would you expect the authorities to control whether it has Wi-Fi or not? If they could do that, then they would stop the illegal selling altogether

For the M8 it's a different story, because Meizu wants to sell it legally, of course.

Anyway, this discussion is not new... I think I remember a post by JW around 1 year ago, explaining that Wi-Fi in China would be hidden by firmware, and that a special firmware could enable it for foreign customers. Let's just hope they really do that, and that they provide the Wi-Fi enabling firmware for the first version of the M8 too.
