DusL himself said it would have Wi-Fi
"The global version will have WiFi. Something about regulations in China is causing a wifi software-locked device."

I believe everything that DusL says.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsI believe.
I always believe what Mr. Jack Wong (peace be upon him) says. Circumstances which operate against an optimistic schedual planned is not sufficient reason to doubt good intentions from a company exploring new territory.
I am grateful that there is a man in this uncaring world that is active in hearing the input of his potential customers. How many presidents can you count that are active on the company's website? Do you know their names? Because of this I'm sure the M8 will be The People's M8.
By and by, the next time you hear the words, "Please step out of the car sir." Mr. Jack Wong (peace be upon him) has your back. Even The People's M8.

Well, I was way off for voting for October, maybe my hopes were too high. Looks like we'll just have to wait and see when the M8 comes out.

Thanked 9 Times in 5 PostsWi-fi is not 'allowed' on phones in China. All phones sold in China have Wifi disabled. Of course it doesn't mean that you cannot find Wi-fi enabled ones here. Just more difficult and probably not too legal.
One school of thought is that the two main mobile phone operators in China (China Mobile and China Unicom) are owned by the son of a very, very important person in China, and they don't want to lose GPRS connection revenue. Which is why WiFi is effectively disabled on mainland phones. Too many Chinese would hog around Starbucks or other free WiFi zones.
I'll wait for the WiFi version to come out before buying one. I don't use it much, but I prefer having the option there if I need it. (Just like 3G and GPS).
