making use of b-frames further saves bitrate - or improves quality at the same bitrate. Other than that, if M8 features "direct playback without reencoding" it makes sense to support today's standard which is b-frames.

yeah B frames helps to keep file sizes down too. Don't most Mpeg 4 based (xvid, divx etc) standards use B-frames as the default setting?

Humm.. I'm pretty sure that the "use B-frames" option is turned off by default both in the DivX and XviD encoders. Also, together with "global motion compensation" this is one the advanced options that usually become disabled when you use an encoding profile other than the "unconstrained" one.

Encoding profiles are generally used so that the output file is guaranteed to playback correctly on common media devices (I'm guessing that hardware decoding of B-frames is a common problem). So there is still hope that many video files available on the internet are encoded with that in mind - at least most of the legal ones should be, since you pay for them.

EDIT: I just checked and no, "B-frames" are not turned off by default after all.. they're just disabled in the DivX "Mobile" and "qMobile" Profiles, as well as in the 4 XviD "Simple" profiles. But I guess these are not used very much anyway...

Wong needs to realize that he can't keep trying to make the M8 the best technological device on the market because technology simply moves forward too fast. There's a point where you have to basically say enough is enough and release what you have.

I think he knows it ...
Maybe he just don't want to realize it?

I strongly doubt he is sleeping very well at night ...
