Feature request thread

Is there a global (sticky) thread where s.o. collect wanted features or design changes? Maybe - after one week s.o. can send the outcome to J.W. directly . Most times, small stuff changes do so much for the usability.

Well then let me start:

the Phone Design:
- I prefere the fake CNMO - 'three button' design in favor of the three, too small three circels!!! (will help to stop the Ipone clone discussion, too).
- make eight (4x2), but smaller holes in two rows, instead of the three big ones (dust!).
- more side buttons (programmable) will help to controll the unit within the pocket, without draining the battery (screen)
- ship the unit already enclosed with a protection foil
- ship with a small plastic holder for standing as the Ipod Touch (very cheap, but do so much)
- make an video out option for the TV

technical part:
- put 32GB in! I do not need it, but it is a selling argument.
- 3G-option is a must.
- same for the front camara! (All guys with family, working all over the world will understand).

User interaction:

- Option: 3G only for surfing (battery drain!). Best: only use 3G, if the opera browser is open, or use the camara phone mode.
- GPS-support - even if only with bluetooth - but with goolgle maps!
- open for all software (OK - J.W. said so, but only to mention it)
- fully skinable (not only some icons, backgrounds, as e.g. for SE phones)
- tunable volume always and everywhere! (not only in vertical mode as for the Ipod Touch, a real pain in the A*). BUTTONS!!
- WORKING sync for Outlook, Kmail and Evolution (SyncML team will help for sure!).
- Flash support! (I know, Opera has to care about, but to mention it)
- Alarm bell, even when the phone is switched off (as the siemens did).
- Fast boot
- A Flight mode!
- programmable shortcuts onto the home screen.
- Today screen (showing the appointmenst of today) + short cuts

Software features
Must have:

• Fully customizable themes
• Calendar
• Address Book
• Calculator
• Office file reader (.doc .ppt .odt etc...)
• Estimated remaining battery life
• File-browser:

• Deleting, Renaming, Copying, Moving files etc..
• Display all of the content, opening all formats (unsupported formats in text viewer)
  
• Picture thumbnail/filename view
  
• Search function for folders, files and ID3 tags

• Support playlists (winamp etc...)
• Gapless playback
• Smooth interface (No eye candy where the system is too slow!!)

Nice to have:

• Stopwatch
• Russian, French, German, Spanish dictionaries

Hardware features

• SD card slot (I own a D2 and its really nice to have extended space and view pictures from a friends Digital Camera)

There are probably thousand more features I just couldn't think of now....

Software features
Must have:

• compatibility with WinCE 6 application (i.e. can run application developped for future windows mobile 7)

Nice to have:

• compatibility with WinCE 5/ Windows mobile 6 applications

IMHO, This take care of all software feature requests: there are thousands great applications that exists for the windows mobile platform, many of them freeware. stopwatch, customized today page, media playes, document viewer, you name it. Without it, M8 can be a nice little gadget, with it it is a full fledged smartphone....Big difference ;-)

Hardware features

• SD card slot (I own a D2 and its really nice to have extended space and view pictures from a friends Digital Camera). I aggree with that: I would take a 16 Gb M8 + SDHC card slot over a 32 GB one...Hum, maybe I would even take a 8Gb M8 + SDHC slot over a 32 Gb one. SDHC Card are now quite cheap in 8 Gb capacities...And they should get cheap for 16 Gb end of 2008. Basically, it would allow to upgrade the M8 memory during it's life, the inner flash rom would be used to store programs and essential data only, media would always be on swapable SDHC...
• As many side control as possible, at least 2 buttons or a wheel: as said before, great for in-pocket control, and even greater for one-handed navigation (great for ebook). The absolutue minimum is user-remappable volume control buttons
• basic protection case with a flip cover and a stylus holder (for those older programs using stylus input method, which will be quite tricky to use with finger input). Maybe some holes or fixation system at the back to allow for flip-cover only attachment, and a variety of more or less protective/bulky protections
• Extended battery (even if thicker). Can get usefull, although replacable battery is already nice
• use the USB-host functionality for allowing (cheap) add-on (front camera, barcode scanner, ...)
• internal GPS (bluetooth ones would already be supported, if WinCE compatibility exist). Would make a great all-in-one device

i have only a few software requests, nice file manager, good pdf readre that can handle large files, theme support and a lot of visualisations in media player

GPS, good quality TV out, line in and out, Wifi/ internet, wifi connection to computer, file manager, and all of the above. But i believe the phone already has most of these features.

also the ability to replace factory installed programs with one you download/buy/create/ect. would be good
