yeah, i know. i have nokia n73 which was a great camera phone and still is with it's carl zeiss optics. i also know it's not all about megapixels, probably the best mobile cam is the 2mpx one on se k750i (first release cid 36 chip) second place goes to k800i/k810i with 3.2 mpx and after them come the 5 mpx phones n82/n95 (same optics but n82 has xenon flash). so yeah having a nice cam is a plus but i don't need it that much.

I agree with DusL, a _good_ camera in your phone would be a great advantage because usually when you see something worth photographing, you just don't have your camera with you.

Unfortunately, phone cameras usually suck IMO. Even the 5 megapixel ones. This is because pixel count has little to do with image quality (colour, tone, noise ratio, etc. are far more important).
In practice, pixel count is just a myth. Not only it gives a false idea of resolution improvement (due to the fact that it increases quadratically with linear resolution), but in many cases the higher MP camera produces poorer quality images. This is because when you increase the number of sensor cells without increasing the actual sensor area, the signal-to-noise ratio of each pixel decreases.

What I would like to see in a phone would be a sensor with nice quality/price ratio, like the Fuji SuperCCD sensors. With that, I would be happy with just 3MP.

Agreed: IMHO there is simply not room enough in a smartphone to put a good camera: I have a K750i, the camera is ok, but clearly not in the same class as even a cheap compact camera. Compared to camcoder for doing small movies, it is even worst.

Just a question of lens diameter, the lens on smartphone is too small to allow for good resolution, more pixel will just be wasted. Not to forget that it does not let enough light in to allow for short exposure in something else than bright sunlight.
This kills indoor movie and make obtaining a good indoor shot even more difficult, as you need an very steady hand. And the kind of picture I take with my phone are typically indoor or with imperfect light, with unsteady hand because I have to take the picture very fast: for the nice outdoor ones, where I can take my time getting a nice shot, I usually have my camera/camcoder with me, as I am sightseeing...

Except for swivelling desing like some nokia, where you can physically fit nicer lenses because you are not limited by the thickness of the device, even 2MP is already an overkill, going over it just increase the size of you jpegs without adding any improvement to picture quality imho.

While I'm repeatedly disappointed with the MiniOne's delays, none of the products mentioned in this thread have really caught my attention. the best one so far seems to be the HTC Diamond, but even that has too small a base storage capacity to double as a music player. Also, there are indications that the UI might be a bit sluggish, but this is mainly due to the limitations of WM6. A new review is up:

I've read the thread a bit more carefully, and must reconsider: the Xperia looks impressive, even though it's probably way out of my budget range. But what I'll really be waiting for now is the Samsung SGH-i900, as mentioned by someone earlier in the thread. 16GB standard storage is massive, as is the availability of a SDHC slot. Samsung makes quality, phones, so if can get it for around USD600, I wouldn't mind picking it up. here's some more info on the phone.

edit: the last link clears up the doubts I had about whether the device supported Wi-Fi. It does . And, it'll be released in July, so there's a chance that it'll be available on Ebay at a decent price by the time the MiniOne is expected to be released, giving me a basis for comparison between the two before picking one.

Message to Meizu: This is a real prototype!

With all this ranting for soooo long about the M8, where the hell is it? Even nVidia has a mobile phone platform up and running demos. The FACT is, when the M8 FINALY comes out, it will be way behind other phones. BTW check this prototype out from nVidia (message to MEIZU: this is a real prototype): infoSync : Videos

It is not a phone prototype, AFAIK NVidia has no intention whatsoever to enter the mobile phone/ PMP/ PDA market.
It is a demonstration device for their new PROCESSOR/system-on-chip, the APX2500. Kudos to Nvidia to have produced a functioning demonstration device, that's very impressive. However, only an anounce of a phone/PDA/pmp manufacturer about a new device using the APX2500 can hint about new great phones just around the corner, not something from NVIDIA. The APX2500 news is equivalent to samsung anouncing the 6410 ( I guess NVIDIA has produced a very nice demonstration because they are the new kid on the bloc in the mobile processor market, while samsung has processor since a long time...They had to show they are serious about it, and they sure convinced me...Now it is more Apple, Meizu, Htc or Eten they need to convince ;-) ).

This is not to defend the m8, the absence of news so close to the anounced date for a working prototype in some chinese expo is not good...And Wong has anounced video of a functional phone for end of may, early june at the latest...I smell one more delay, and it stink ;-) )

But the APX2500 is not an alternative in the way iphone2, xperia, htc diamond or new samsung are...

Aight i have waited and waited and waited(..first for the M8 that..i hope..will realse sometime this summer) for a new phone..and phones has come and gone, some was better then some others, some had small issues whit it..i remember when i was so into the LG Viewty and the Sony Ericsson W960i..then when i found the small problems whit them like LG doesnt have WI-FI and lack of functionality and can (as they say) Store only 2 GB ..and The W960i is just a crappy touchscreen phone, would be better if they removed the touch..aight but now i am tired of waiting and orderd a Sony ericsson G900.

Now lots of people here who is waiting for the M8 Whants the things that this phone has..WI-FI, 5 megapixel kamera ( whit autofocus whit a led light the m8 does just have a 3,2 ) Touchscreen, pretty much the same Music player as the W960i. and even tough it doesnt have 3,5 inch screen it is pretty good whit a 2,4. let me give u a tip and check that phone out if u whant to spend more time waiting and suffering..when the meizu comes out ore any other phone that is über cool, it will come über cooler phones and i will buy a new better Super über-cooler phone when the time comes, in the meanwhile, i will play around whit my G900 until the day nokia has created the nano phones.

2.4" is way to small. I have 2.8" now and that is barely enough. My next phone must have 3.3" or more.

MP's aren't what matters. The sensor is more important than the pixels.

Yep, and nice specs too. Price looks high though, especially when you add the microSD for storage (minimum internal storage).
Definitely a possible alternative, maybe more so than the diamond (at least, microSD can be changed and should get above 4Gb in the not-too-distant future).

I am not a huge fan of physical sliding keyboard, but here it seems thay managed to keep the device quite small and thin, so why not :-) Wonder why they did not go to a full screen for the front though, especially as the front keyboard is already sensitive and have 2 state...

It seems that the sony ericson x-peria X1 use microSD for storage in the end, not sony proprietary memory stick (the HTC influence? I think HTC manufacture the X1 for S-E).
This makes the X1 much more attractive for me, and another possible choice...depending on price of course.
And google demonstrated android demonstration on a phone which seemed quite interesting too, maybe an HTC android prototype. With both android phones, SE Xperia, Wilcom and samsung phones, and Iphone2 anounced for the last quarter of 2008, things are heating up: it seems the end of the year will be quite busy. Tough times for m8, even if Meizu manage to get it released worldwide in 2008...

X1 looks pretty promising. I'm pretty bored with my iPhone at this point and wouldn't mind picking up one of these or a M8 in the next year or so just to be different.

Good news for die hard Meizu fans, just waiting for drag and drop and multiple format support: zodttd hae just ported VLC player to the iPhone! They already have mpeg, uncompressed AVI and mp3 files working, and they are going to bring more. I must say its impressive that they beat apple at their own job, but they are dedicated modders. As soon as they release divx and xvid support it will become my favourite app as you can just use it without itunes thanks to ssh.
