Sprint | now is good
no alternative for me: low resolution screen (bad ebook reader, poor browser experience), no wifi, low internal memory (which is ok if an SDHC card reader is present...but microSD is NOT ok: <30€ for 8GB SDHC, and 16GB model exist (32GB is announced), while microSD is < 30€ for 4 GB, and does not go higher than 8GB (which is already difficult to find) )...

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Hi guys,

I've been closely following the progress of the MiniOne M8 for a long time now and have been excited about its purported capabilities, hoping the device would come out as soon as possible so I could buy one. In the meantime, it's obvious the rest of the world have not been sitting idly by on their laurels and are beginning to come out with devastating new phones that I honestly believe will 'kill' the M8 in its track and make it just another 'so-so' device without any real appeal - maybe except for its price tag. For example, just look at the links below for the new Xperia X1 phone from market giants Sony Erricsson:

Sony Ericsson - XPERIA™ X1

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

It’s a shame Meizu are taking forever to develop and deliver a phone that was way ahead of anything when it was announced, but now it appears nothing special by the time it will eventually be released. The Xperia is ‘real’, you can feel it in your hands (just check out the videos on YouTube etc..) and the specs of the device are just awesome. Sure it doesn’t have TV out and has a smaller 3 inch screen (but higher resolution 800x480) but, honestly, will that really make a difference?
All I can request is that CEO Jack Chong look at the market and the competition that is brewing and get the M8 out as soon as possible. I’ll still be watching this space to see how it develops. Maybe there still might be hope...

you are correct meizu definitely need to deliver in august or it will be too late. However, the xperia is not actually out yet. In addition, you have to think, the xperia is a high end 3g cell phone form sony ericsson, off line when it is released you are looking at around $1000/£500 at least. When the Nokia N95 was released it was this much and the sony ericsson has a higher spec. This price will not fall that much in the following few monthes and by that time the M8 will be released (with any luck). You also have to remember that while the xperia will no doubt be nice it will also have no tv-out, no xvid/open source/ losless codec support, no usb-otg, no built in flash (sd card only), only 262,000 color screen. It will also have a smaller screen by 0.4 inches which does make a significant difference when watching films. However the Xperia will have 3g, a slightly higher res screen and a better camera no doubt, but you will also be paying almost 3 times the price of the M8! The m8 will still be a decent option IMO.

I doubt the Sony will have SD... probably only some Memory Stick variation, which will be extremely expensive as usual. Also, wasn't it going to be released by the end of this year or so? By that time the M8 might be out too, and at a much lower price point.

yeah sorry I meant memory stick micro or whatever. Although I did hear that a number of the large companies are working together to make 1 standard memory type for all cell phones. The release date was said to be second half of the year so it may come around the same time as the M8 or perhaps slightly earlier even.

M8 Competition - TG Sambo touchscreen PMP

It has WiFi, DAB & digital TV. No word on price, but this looks like a significant challenger to the M8. Plus there are working device pictures.

My Bad, its not a phone. Still impressive spec though, M7 competitor, if it ever gets built.

yeah saw this on engadget, looks real nice. No phone functionality though. Tbh If I had access to all the amazing pmp's coming out of South Korea I probably wouldn't even care about Meizu. I'd most likely have some kind of istation pmp or something with HSDPA connectivity already. I wish this stuff was available over here.

yep, very nice PMP. Not a direct competitor, but it is good news: it means some of the m8 interresting features are now trickling down (more powerfull proc, larger amount of flash, and high-res screen) and may become mainstream on portable devices. Maybe new competitors are closer than I though, and choice will be larger than vaporware m8/ closed iPhone/ expensive high end PDAphones in just a few month.
the HTC Diamond (succesor to touch) should be anounced in a few days too, it will alos be interresting (I expect it's main weakness will be on proc power side: probably too weak to play media well on a VGA screen...but we'll see :-) They can even anounce some android device...or - This would really be great - anounce that their new devices can have a winmo or android OS).

It looks pretty good, but it isn't a phone so I don't think it is a competitor to the M8 at all.

So as we are still waiting for some prototype, here another phone which seems to be interesting:

M8 Competition - Nvidia APX 2500 Prototype

I dont know much about this new phone other than that its a prototype that will only be manufactured if a mobile phone company wants to pick it up. The prototype is stunning.

Nvidia APX 2500 Prototype-

These specs are from the Nvidia website:

Nvidia APX 2500 Specs

the phone looks different on the nvidia website
but you can read a lot more about the phone on there.

I dont think the meizu phone can even compare to this...if it even comes out...

Wow that Nvidia product looks awesome, I think I would take it over the M8 if it ever were available.

I reckon that the HTC looks pretty sexy, looks a lot more creative with it's style in terms of it's outer appearance.
