On paper, the SE should sound much better. Meizu changed from Wolfson WM8753 in the first M8 to WM8993 in the SE. 8753 is "Generation 4" according to Wolfson's marketing while the 8993 is "Generation 6". As well as slightly higher SNR & headphone output, the 8993 is also much more power-efficient.
The real question is whether Meizu has taken maximum advantage of the 8993; for example, it includes what Wolfson calls "ReTune" technology, a full parametric equalizer for the speakers.
Also, comparing the M8 to the M6 is a useless exercise in my opinion. Beyond the fact that the M8 and M6 are completely different devices, there are so many factors in getting a player to sound the way it does, you have to consider the hardware, firmware, and circuit design. The M8 and M6 both use Samsung processors (though different) and both use Wolfson codecs (though different), but the M8 is a vastly more complicated device...so how are Meizu engineers supposed to duplicate the sound signature of the M6? If you're a fan of the older M6 and first-gen M3, forget it, they use a Philips codec. I personally think Meizu captured "lightning in a bottle" with the M6; really average components that managed to sound much better than the sum of the parts. Meizu can get in the same ballpark with the M8, but best to appreciate the M8 as a great-sounding device on its own.

I second what c19932 said. I changed my M8 for the M8SE just yesterday and the sound is perceivably much less distorted at high volumes. I don't have the means to directly compare the two, but without expecting much of a difference I was surprised when I played back my music files yesterday night.
I'm using the latest leak (new UI, 9.5.7), btw.

I don't hear any hiss. About what frequency range are we talking here?
I cannot judge the difference in sound via headphones easily (cannot directly compare M8SE with v.1.0), so I won't say anything about the bass. Most obvious is the change of sound through the internal speaker, though. Much less distortion, more clarity, more bass. Maybe that's all the same (less distortion --> more clarity + more bass)....
I also noticed that the sound during calls is clearer and able to be set to a higher volume than before.Last edited by rekado; 11-09-2009 at 11:09 AM. Reason: fixed typo
