The SL sounds better and uses a newer DAC.
Can't wait to play with the Meizu MX!

I did earlier own an SP and now an SL so I can answer your question.
I was able to make a comparison just before my old SP died and did left for service.
Here is it:
Bass: On the SP the bass was smooth and could be adjusted to be strong or accurate, no trouble here. On the SL it was actually something disappointing. The bass was difiantly not thin or lower but is was pretty muddy instead. Hard to explain. It trying to be details but its sounding like an earphone is “farting” like it is on safe volumes but it is not and it just generate from the sound itself. It just like if ViBE is on but it’s not. When turning this on its just like I only get more it. I was thinking that it could be a new bug in the firmware where the player never turns this function off completely. Still it’s pretty annoying and I have to lower it more than I wanted to let the bass just be smooth at all. Nearly no boost at all. If not, most of my bass tracks just a wrong muddy experience.
In that I am missing my old SP.
Mid (general soundstage): If you use the same sound settings and make a straight comparison, both sound signature is quiet identical. You may just have to readjust the bass and treble boost on the SL because it’s a little bit different how you adjust those on each model but that’s it.
Overall SL DO having a slightly advantage. It’s has more detail and instruments just playing more clear into your ears which is a nice welcome. So no doubt the SL has slightly better sound quality. Might be that new DAC but another explain could be that solved hiss issue. While the SP has sometimes noticeable unwanted hiss, the SL don’t have this when you not or do playing a song or movie.
Treble: The only thing I was need on the SL here was readjust the treble boost on new to let it match the SP. Then they were just identical here.
The treble boost on the SP only go 3 steps while on the SL it goes 8 steps.
Volume: On Volume, there was actually a slightly different here too. While I use 15 on the SP to let my music go nice, I needed 17-18 on the SL to get the same volume. Not an issue at all but it’s there.
Of my experience, both players did have it own strength and weakness. The SP model is just going out of the market very fast now and now hard to find, so you may need to pick a SL.
M6SL + Westone 3? Oh my…sure, sounds to me like one of the ultimate portable solutions you can deal with right now.
I get very soon the Triple.fi 10 Pro soon which should be just being step below in sound but still pretty wild. I may try out the 3’s later next year.
Hope this help.

I think the SP is the best player I have ever heard, especially the Bass, as the Torminator has said. However, I have not gotten my hands on an SL yet. I guess if you are a Bass head, go with the SP but if you're more of a classical person, go for the SL. Another incentive for the SL is it's only as thick as an iPod Nano, while the SP is about twice the thickness, and you get better battery life with the SL.
@The Torminator, according to your favorite earphone list, you say your favorite is the MD-52, but you also say in your post you have the Westone 3's. Are the MD52's really better than the triple-driver Westone 3's?!?Last edited by hli53194; 12-19-2008 at 11:54 PM.

Thanked 0 Times in 0 PostsYeah woho the SP is really amazing and the best player i ever heard, too.
The acustic is very cool and some noises like clapping hands are really real^^.
I didnt compare it with the SL .
Didn't the SP have 36 hours of battery life and the SL only 25-26?
I read that on mp3-player.de, as the product information.
- Bis zu 26 Stunden Akkulaufzeit bei Audiowiedergabe
- Till 26 Hours of battery time while playing music

Thanked 19 Times in 19 PostsThe official specs are 20 hours on the SP and 23 hours on SL. The SL is rated to have more battery life anyway than the SP so it's properly around 23-26.

However I don't really feel any improvement by battery life on the SL. I only get around 8 hours with a bright screen mostly on all the time.
The SL could fit bass heads very nicely if it might weren't that muddy. I can be still like the SP can be adjusted to be very punchy.
What!!!
I think you completely misunderstood my post.
I say the Westone 3 might work great with the M6. I just don't have these or have ordered them but I like to try them out in future.
I just say I get Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10 Pro soon. They are quiet expected to be my new favorite. Can’t wait to find out.
MD-52 is still my favorite but I have received a few cheap earphones since last time.
I may update my signature soon in the new year as well. It is a bit old already.
But MD-52 will never touch high-end earphones.
So the answer is no!

I still wonder why the screen doesn't just shut off after a certain time (It does, but you have to wait 5 minutes, and is not user adjustable). If you notice, the brightness gets automatically set to 1 after your backlight turn off setting in the settings menu. Why not just have it turn completely off?
