You have to hold menu and play at the same time for the entire recovery.

Oh and don't forget, you have to hold M and Play/Power for the Whole time, not just the beginning. There is a link to a guide in my signature with more details on how to use DFU Tools with your player, if you are unfamiliar with DFU. Hope this helps!
If you are having trouble with your player, please visit this thread first and try the steps before you panic. Most likely you will be able to fix your player easily using the steps listed.
