Are you sure you hold down the power and M button down during the WHOLE process? If you have an SL, please refer to the thread on SL DFU Tools.
If you are having trouble with your player, please visit this thread first and try the steps before you panic. Most likely you will be able to fix your player easily using the steps listed.

    I am positive. I have the SP-version.

Try waiting for the battery to empty.

Try just plug it in for many hours, To charge the battery.. There are rare cases when you totally destory the player beyond fixing (even from DFU) but i dont think this is the sitiuation.

How can I wait? It won't even turn itself on.

    Same exact problem

    Hi everyone,

I have the exact same problem:
    1) While I was listening to some music, I switched to the next song and suddenly my screen turned black. M6 just died from that second till now.
    2) M6 is dead. In the sense that it is switched off and it doesn't even flash when connected to usb or when I press the on/play button.
    3) Pressing "M button" + "On/Play button", then connecting the usb cable while having DFU tools activated (the correct version: SP in my case) gives NO RESULTS..

Unless I solve this initial problem I'll never find out whether this method works or not.

I've read the billion and one threads in here about this, but it seems to not be working for me (especially since for the other cases at least the M6 would give signs of life whereas mine doesn't ).

Please help me. I'm out of ideas and I have some important stuff saved in it that I need to recover!

    Thanks in advance.

By the sound of it, your player might be completely bricked...

What did you see when it died? Did the screen instantly go black or fade? You could have a loose battery connection, was it ever dropped? If all else fails, you have a chance of fixing by opening your player and checking for loose connections, but make sure you are grounded!!! Get a long strand of conductive wire, stick one end into the 3rd prong on a power outlet (The round one), and tie the other end to your wrist. Then you can open up your player to fix it. Sorry if this isn't helpful, but I'm pretty clueless about this situation as well.

Thanks for the quick reply mbarry .

Unfortunately the screen went instantly black . However, I don't think there's a loose battery connection since I can feel the battery warm up when I connect it to my laptop's usb port.

Regarding being dropped... hmm... I don't recall having ever dropped it.

Damn... actually opening the M6? That will be my absolute last resort, but thanks for the suggestion.

My M6 awoke from the coma a couple of days after... for no apparent reason. It almost seems as if I had to let it cool down for a bunch of hours to make it work again... very strange.

Oh well, better back up all the files I had saved inside before it's too late .

Anyway, is this 'glitch' some sort of initial warning like "hey, next time this happens I'll die for sure" kind of thing?

Not necessarily, I think the battery meter might have thought the battery was fuller than it actually was, and then once the battery died, your player did too. Although I don't know why it didn't come back when you tried to charge it. This is could happen anytime, I don't know specifically what's wrong, so as you stated, back up all your data, and just use it. If it does break, you can find a M6 4 GB for $30 nowadays.

Seems like your player hung up (while only the display was off), so a simple reset should have helped (instead of waiting for the battery to run dry).
