    M6 and Portable Apps...

I recently stumbled upon Portable Apps. (www.portableapps.com). I'm a bit of a slow adopter for certain things, but bear with me. I experimented with a spare 1G stick I have and I liked what I saw. A standalone installation of FF and other apps. And then the obvious question: "Would this work from my M6?".

Quick answer: of course!. I love the versatility of the M6. I installed it and customized FF just as if I had installed it in my computer. There is a slight performance hit (I'd say about 10-15% compared to a local install). But I like it. There are other apps available (ClamAV, Pidgin, OpenOffice, etc). There is one caveat though: installing OpenOffice and Gaim (which comes in the default install) confuses the M6 when it updates the library. These apps come with a couple of wav files that the updater reads. Apparently it doesn't like them much.

How's that for the ultimate tool? Music, your personalized tool, Pics, Vids, FM Radio. iPod eat your heart out!. Now I have a nifty excuse to upgrade into an 8GB M3 or M6. My general idea is to have an 8GB unit, leave 2GB out for data and docs, and 6GBs for music. That'll reduce the number of sticks I'm carrying to only one.

    Gaim is called Pidgin now

and besides, hehe you need any pendrive or meizu as portable drive to launch portable apps, they are cool and all but is that really usefull? do you really move around that much and use this software on other computers?

i've tried that and it turned out useless

Well consider the fact that if you use a corporate system, like me, this is cool. No installing of 'unauthorized' apps, no history trace, etc. Less exposure, if you get my drift. I'll gladly trade off some speed for a lot of peace of mind. Besides, I extensively the Googleplex and I only need FF to access it.

Case in point: A while back I used Thunderbird in my corporate lap. On one of those net scans performed at work it showed up. I actually had an idiot (so called) application expert ask me what was Thunderbird and what it was for. Bottom line: If I can use apps of my choosing that don't show up on a registry scan, that's a plus. ;-)
