7 inch Portable Screen for M6

I found a portable DVD player that plays AVI video files here:
    http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/produ....do?oid=186001
7" color screen: This portable DVD player's 7" anti-reflective color TFT-LCD screen is large and bright enough to provide you with a great entertainment experience every time.
Multiple formats: This player is compatible with DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, VCD, CD, HDCD, CD-R/RW, MP3, WMA, and MPEG4 formats.
Audio: The built-in stereo speaker with volume control is paired with a headphone jack to keep your sound as good as you need it.
Remote control: An included credit card-size remote control lets you access your player's controls wirelessly.

It sells for US$89.95. When I got it, I found that it has a USB port on the side. So I plugged in the M6 to the port (turn on the M6 first) and was surprised to see that the DVD player recognized the M6. There is a "MENU" button on the player which when pressed open a browser-like screen. I selected a video on the M6 and it played just fine - although it was rotated 90 degrees - as that was the way the video was encoded.

So I re-encoded the video with "Mencoder" - without the rotate command - and the video played fine on both the DVD and the M6. I also tried playing some music files (MP3 encoding) and they also worked fine on the DVD player - it has a spectrum analyzer type display for music files.

That is one cheap dvd player....

Not that amazing it plays the files on the M6 though , its not specifically designed for the M6 , it just reads data off mass storage devices and plays it.

    Still , nice find

The interesting thing is that most portable DVD players (I have looked at a lot of them - many much more expensive) do NOT play AVI files and even fewer have a USB port acting as a host.

The menu was on the M6? Maybe it is some sort of pre-USB OTG stuff already on the player?

    mbarry,

Sorry for the confusion. The menu is on the DVD player. The M6 just acts like an external hard drive (as in Windows).

Oh okay. There goes my hopes for Meizu developing USB OTG anytime soon...

Someone already stated that J. Wong is throwing out USB OTG functions... it's in the thread for a modest proposal to Meizu.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm seriously considering buying this DVD player. I've been looking to buy a bigger screen to enjoy my movies as the 2.4" screen of my m6 hasn't been cutting it

If you are located in the US, they have it on sale for $79.95 this week.

One thing I did not mention in my original post is that this player comes with a detachable 7.2V 2200mAH Li-Ion battery. Pretty unusual as most other low price DVD players have NiMH batteries.

Thanks rmteo - I noticed the sale too. I think I'm going to splurge and buy it today or tomorrow. Will update. So this can really play avi files from an external mass storange device? Sweet! I can bring the dvd player and movies on my flash drives or meizu and I'm good to go! One more thing: do the converted movies on the meizu play fullscreen or not when attached to the dvd player? *Edit, never mind, I can see from the picture in your post that they do. However, is the quality good or grainy and pixellated?

The video files of the M6 play close to full screen on the DVD player (there are thin black bands on the top and sides - slightly thicker on the sides). The videos I use are encoded to 320x240 and work good on the player - not pixellated and quite good (a little grainy) when enlarged on the player. Also, remember that your videos need to be encoded without the 90 degree rotation for them to play correctly. The M6 can play non-rotated videos although depending on the movie, it can appear jerky on the M6 - slightly lower FPS (I use 15fps) works better for non-rotated videos on the M6. Of course, it your movies are only going to be used on flash drives (or an external USB hard drive) then you can use whatever FPS you want.

You can also encode your movies to AVI format and save them on to DVD and depending on bitrate & resolution you can easily get 8-16 hours on each disk due to the more effective compression of AVI as opposed to the MPEG2 encoding of a standard DVD. The player will play these disks just fine.
