Why I decided against the M8

After the Cebit disaster (hey, they only showed a plastic box which could show three pictures, they didn't even try to put in at least the basic hardware) I was looking around to find a mobile phone, which looks nice, has a bunch of usable features, is slim and may replaces my m6 also.

So I decided to go with the Sony Ericsson W910i.
+ Stylish, slim, cool interface
+ Great sound quality for mp3 playback etc.
+ You can do anything via bluetooth: sync your contacts/calender/notes, control your media (for example skip to the next/previous track) using a BT headset, easily share pictures/music/videos with other BT mobile phones/PCs/...
+ Shake control: Shuffle your playlists and skip to the next/previous track by simply flicking your wrist
+ Auto rotate: By using a tilt sensor the screen will rotate depending on how you hold your phone. This is also great for animated backgrounds, games(!) etc.
SenseMe: Creates playlists depending on your mood.
+ UMTS

- Well, to be honest, the built-in camera is crap. But I won't use it anyway.
- No touchscreen.

Then I bought the Motorola S9 BT Stereo Headset. Nice piece of technology. I've just tested it for a few minutes but it's working fine and the sound is great. You can barely feel it on your head (behind your neck to be precise) and it comes without cables So it's perfect for work-out and running.

Right now I'm waiting for a bigger memory card and then I'll see if this mobile phone can outdo my m6.

Another thing to mention: Everything is working perfectly with Vista x64 SP1.

Conclusion: If you don't want to wait for the M8 anymore or if you want a new mobile phone/media player until the m8 will be released ... think about the Sony Ericsson W910i. It's great.

I have used the W910i before, as a friend of mine has one, it is a nice phone. But compared to what the M8 should be like it is really no competition at all. The W910i is basically useless for video due to the small low res screen and it only has limited audio codec support. It would also be useless as an internet device aswell due to it's limited browser, small screen and no wifi. Don't get me wrong I don't blame you for buying something else, the M8 has taken far too long. But Comparing the W910i to the M8 is pointless as the M8 is a different class of device. We are talking about a full featured, high end touchscreen internet device/pda/media player as compared with the W910i which is just an average (but still nice) sony ericsson handset. I see what u mean though as a phone to use in the mean time, befor the M8's release it is definitely a good option.

Nobody knows whether the m8 will be better than the W910i. The m8 isn't out yet.

Technology hasn't advanced that far yet, as the iPhone is the only in its market class atm.

Of course the specifications of the M8 are superior compared to the W910i ... but the M8 is not out yet and I doubt that it will be released this year in Europe. As I was in the need of a new phone I decided to go with the combination W910i+S9, which may also replace my M6. I'm still looking forward to the release of the M8. If it will be this year I'll probably not buy the M8 and wait for an enhanced M8
Until then I'll be happy with my new mobile phone which could really beat the M6 as well ... it features a better screen (same resolution but brighter) and an ambient light sensor, which adjusts the brightness nicely.

(I only have music in the mp3 format .. so I don't need support for flac etc.)

The making or breaking of a mobile phone consists out of more than just merely specs. Better specs (which aren't actually realised yet as no final units exist) do not warrent a better phone.

I have to agree with sere83. These phones are not aimed at the same people, and really should not be compared. I think the M8 could be geared more towards business (just an example) because it uses Windows CE.

The W910i is a hot cellphone. But it isn't a PDA. Two different things. I already own a cellphone, and so do almost everyone.

That's true because you can't call somebody on a PDA :P
That would be a smartphone, which is a combo of PDA and cellphone.

Smartphones are mostly meant for business users as they have good support in terms of push e-mail and detailed agenda functions etc, in combination with the phone function.

The iPhone and (possibly) m8 are however a strange type of smartphone. They are meant for full image surfing, watching video's or listening music etc. Which is totally different from the business applications.

I can hardly image the W910i sucking with video's because of the resolution, as it's just the same as the m6 (320x240).

The LCD is 240x320, but what I am curious about is the screen size. They don't even have it on the Sony Ericsson website.

Nevermind, found out that it is 2.4". It doesn't have a 3.5mm headphone jack...
