Bamboo ADzero phone shoots in - Pocket-lint

I bet it feels great in the hand, and I like the circular flash. I wonder how much it's going to be!

    Rootable perhaps? (sorry...)

Seriously though, I think it's the best looking device I've seen in a long time.

The ADzero phone does look awesome, and so does the m9 in that wooden case! Has anyone got the m9 case from taobao?? Would love to see some user photos...

There's a couple of companies who i'm keeping an eye on regarding my next smartphone... Lumigon, ADzero, sony, verzo (if they survive the awful kinzo), xiaomi, and of course meizu. It's going to be interesting to see who gets the specsrice ratio right this year...

now this is something I really like.
But I wonder how the hardware fits in such a case. I always thought that wood cases would need pretty thick wall thickness to be robust!
But I guess this layer of bamboo is very thin and is just kind of glued to the normal back without any air under it. And I guess you cant remove the back cover, because it would be very easy to break. If this thing hits the market, Kieron-Scoot Woodhouse (the 23 y.o. british designer) will be rich.
Looks I have to concider some others than meizu.

    edit:
I just read that it is stated to be half as heavy as the iphone. If that is true, the hole chassis is made of bamboo and not just a layer on the back. But I wonder how they attach the board with all the hardware on to the wood...with glue? pretty awesome! They say it will be available in UK, so it will be easy to byu for us EU folks.
The LED flash is stated to be very special, cause it is located around the camera itself. pretty good visible on this picture:

Yes, I'll certainly be keeping an eye on it. The wooden case for the M9 looks like it makes the package rather bulky, though still rather pretty. I suppose bamboo was chosen because of it's high tensile strength - it's been used in rather expensive bicycle frames for some time now. It's also one of the most sustainable crops on the planet, far more eco-friendly than plastics.

I hope we see more electronics exploring the use of such materials, if you look at the early televisions say, they were beautifully crafted items of household furniture, rather than the nasty things we have today.

It comes down to how 'cool' is defined, I choose the definition equating to honest, IE not trying to appear to be something other than what it is, whilst also not trying too hard. Eg. Silver/Chromed plastic rather than actual metal. So for me, this phone looks very cool

I just hope that the design doesn't get compromised during the manufacturing process.

Yes the M9 with it's new wooden look gets bulky, because it is a somehow back cover. The wood has to be much inegrated in the whole manufactoring process. So that it get's the chassis for all hardware components.
I really hope so too that i will not get changed because of hardware issues. I guess the heating problem will be gone with bamboo, because wood is a very good isolator.

Sure, here you go...the shop has changed a bit, so the original link died:

    http://aimeu.taobao.com/search.htm

Not much listed for the M9 anymore, but I think the shop is very much open to custom work, so you probably could just ask them what they suggest or what they could do.

From what I can gather, it is still in prototype, and will go on sale in the EU and China at the end of this year or early next.

No, but we're talking about a start-up here...so I'm prepared to cut them a little slack. I think if the production version is polished, well thought through, with specs current with it's time of release, and of course with fully functional firmware, then the wait will have been worth it. The designer has said that it will be running the latest version of Android at the time of release, so my guess is that will probably be jellybean.

I really hope that they are sticking to the darker bamboo and the circle LED flash. Is it just me or is there really no picture available which shows a side view to guess the thickness...

I hope the have the option of the darker colour too The only thing that remotely concerns me is the talk of ADOS, would prefer it to be stock but they say it is 'light' skinned, so hopefully just a custom launcher. Look forward to seeing how it pans out, as they're saying the price point will be at the higher end of the smartphone market then the specs have to be high end to be competitive.

I've subscribed to their newsletter, and there is a shot from their stand at a design exhibition which shows the darker stained version:

that is great info! But because it is a non changeable back cover, I guess they will decide between the two before going life. I really hope for a nice price too. But I guess it will be not cheap! Every body has to be milled out of wood. In contrary it is more cheap to mill one mold and produce thousands of bodies out of it (like Samsung does).
Hold us up to date Stray!

[LINK] to a video with more detail about the phone and company. Nice to see Reuters taking an interest My guess is that the phone will be made by Foxconn, as the money man says their talking to 'one of the largest electronics manufacturers in the world'.
