    Dane Electric M4 MZ2

I just bought a Dane Electric M4 MZ2 from an online vendor. It is on sale for 25 bucks after a 20 bucks rebate. Good price for a 2 gb rebadged Meizu. It was shipped with a very old version without ape support. One thread in this forum said it is compatible with M6 SL. So I tried all the 2.000 versions. None of them worked and it took me two hours... Finally, after I copied the firmware for SP to the root folder, it worked perfectly. Now I can enjoy all my ape music.

If you got the same model recently, be careful about the firmware update and remember to use the SP version of the newest firmware.

Yes, I ordered the same one. I will have it on Friday. I called Dane Elec and talked to someone in the know, and they will not be doing business with Meizu any longer. I e-mailed them asking if they will still honor the warranties as they are the USA distributor.. Still waiting for a reply on that. I use a Macintosh, not sure what to expect as I'm a newbie. If I have any trouble at all it's going back. Great deal but with no support, or exchange, I don't want to be stupid. if you have any help or advice for a Mac user, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

You may find your answer from a previous post:

I don't own a mac myself. So I could not try. I just looked at the back of my player. It is labeled "Version: SP". So it is indeed a SP although the box says SL.

What is ape music? Is it a format?

I bought the same player and probably from the same vendor (B&H) who are selling it on their website as

DANE-ELEC MEIZU 2GB miniplayer slim (Black)

    • 2GB
    • 26 Hour Battery Life
    • 2.4" LCD
    • 30 Hours of Music
    • 12 Hours of Video
    • 800 Photos

Size (WxHxD)3.11 x 1.9 x 0.28" (79 x 48.2 x 7.3mm) Weight1.7 oz (48g) I ordered it with the understanding that it was the MEIZU M6 SL player. But the player I received has Version: SP on the back. It does not have the brushed metal back either. So, obviously it is not the SL player with the Wolfson 8987 chip. I am about to request for the RMA but before I do that I need your opinion about the SP problems and if indeed the SL is better than the SP in terms of sound quality. I know, I know there is another thread where people have already expressed their opinion but I am looking for opinion from people who have heard both the SP and the SL version.

Next time, you should be careful. Look at the back at your S/N number to find out your model. You are extremely lucky your player did not get corrupted after the wrong firmware update. Usually, you would get a white screen and get frozen on it, kind of like if you put Mac software on a Windows computer (Or did you have to DFU your player?). However, welcome to the forums and enjoy your player!
If you are having trouble with your player, please visit this thread first and try the steps before you panic. Most likely you will be able to fix your player easily using the steps listed.

Players: Meizu M6 SP 4GB, iPod Touch 4G
Headphones: SoundMAGIC PL-50s, Auvio In-Ear Armatures, Bose QC-15s.
Current Audio Congifuration: X-Fi Elite Pro w/LM4562 Mod -> Mission MS-50 + Boston Acoustics Subwoofer

    Hey mbarry:
Thanks for your many helpful posts. Just a quick question.. based on the description posted by me above (cut and paste from the vendor website) could you have guessed it was the SP version and not the SL version? I looked at dimensions as my last resort and it says 7.3 mm thick which I saw on the net as the same thickness as the SL version.

Maybe I will keep it because after rebate $25 is not a bad deal for the Meizu. But I feel disappointed because I was expecting the SL. Perhaps it is all in my mind anyway.. maybe in real life I won't be able to tell the difference between a Wolfson 8987 DAC and a UDA1380HN DAC.

    Thanks for all your help.

HEY, c'mon! I get my player tomorrow (from B&H) after waiting a week on shipping. And here you're saying you don't like it? What about the 'great' sound it's supposed to have? Sheeesh!
I am going to play with mine and see how I like it but after reading all the reviews about the Cowon D2 I'm probably going to send it back and get the D2. Maybe I'll keep it as the guy at Dane Elec said he can't even get it at the price of $25!
How much have I spent on MP3 players in the last 10 years? About $40, for an iPod Shuffle.

I am glad to join the Meizu community. You are absolutely right. My player got frozen after I installed the SL firmware by mistake. Luckily, it still showed up in my Windows Vista system as a removable drive. I was able to open the drive in windows explorer and delete the two SL firmware files. Then the player worked again after a restart; this allowed me to install the right SP firmware. I did not use the DFU tool.

The sound quality of this SP is superb with the new firmware. BTW, ape file is in Monkey's Audio format with a 320k sampling rate (Monkey's Audio - a fast and powerful lossless audio compressor).

If you have an SP, good for you! Those things are rare nowadays. Their sound quality is superior to the SL (In my opinion). If you like the Bass being clearer and more punchy, then keep your SP. However some people have said the SL has a generally more warmer sound with everything a bit mixed and muddy, but I like my music to be clear and well defined so I can hear every detail. If I were you, I would keep the SP. However, I am a bit worried because your player is 7.3MM which is the thickness of the SL. My SP is about a centimeter thick. Here's how to determine if your player is an SL or SP. Where is your power button located? Is it on top of the player or is it part of the gray touchstrip? If it is on top, you have a SP, if it is part of the grey touchstrip, then you have a SL. Hope this helps!
