for instance, actually the latest available firmware version is 2.004.3
does it mean there has existed 2.004.1 / 2.004.2 prior versions ?
the same question goes for 2.003.2 ; has there been a 2.003.1 before ?
and so on for 2.002.3 ; has there been previous 2.002.2 / 2.002.1 versions before ?
I am not starting a collection (!) , but simply I found some important role of the firmware on the lcd display .
I have two M6 ( one 2GB and one 8GB ) both bought summer 2007 , hence with Samsung lcd display . Now I found that the 8GB unit has a LCD which behaves strangely , depending on the firmware being used . The irony here being that 2.004.3 delivers a very bright and contrasted image BUT with artefacts ; namely colour banding and 'clouding' ( blacks almost as 'negative') .
So I tried downgrading firmware versions and I found that 2.003.2 would yet smooth a bit these artefacts but not enough; and very strangely the older 2.002.3 firmware would almost fix okay these artefacts. But the price to pay here is some washed out dimed image , with less contrast and some hue shift as well . But overall acceptable
Now indeed I would hope for a firmware that would keep the more 'sharper' and contrasted image but with no artefact . This is why I am looking after all (possibly) released firmware versions to check...
I have a bit discussed the matter with people at Meizu and they aknowledge that there has been a constant seek for the best LCD display from Samsung ; in other words all LCDs are not 'equal' to say it more simply !
now the problem here may be that a given video curve screen driver may be set OK for a given LCD but may turn set wrong for another display ; careful here, this is MY humble 'understanding' of things ! so...
the funny point here being that Meizu support tells me that firmware versions cannot produce what I describe ( different behaviour of the LCD screen according to firmware versions) . I simply cannot accept it since I first can see it , then I can take pictures of it as well , and finally that indeed the firmware has its role as for the 'video curve'
by the way , it would be great if next generation Meizu M7/M8 would provide with BOTH brightness AND contrast settings . As I figure I could have much more control on the display with an added constrast setting
ooops, I realise I am yet a bit long , so I stop here , and wait for any response for what I am looking after
As soon as I will have time (especially to make better pictures ) I will describe all I found . Actually I only started putting in clear evidence that LCDs can be quite different ...
here is a one shot (in full dark , hence no color temperature issue) of the same movie ( Blade Runner) as displayed with the 8GB unit (up) and the 2GB unit (down)
its is quite obvious that the LCD of the 8GB has potentially a much wider GAMUT (color range balance ), but unfortunately due to firmware problems (video curve ?) I cant' get the best of it
I have to 'dim' this rather brilliant display in order to get rid of color banding and clouding ; too bad
