DFU tools do not always work the first or even second time. I've had to use it as many as 10 times on a single player to recover them. But 9 times out of 10 it works, and is a great tool as a las tresort after utilizing all of the reset options.

If you have a white screen, you'll get it back using the DFU's. The only time I've seen it not work correctly is on lite's, where it just didn't have anything to recognize.

I am running XP pro. I am trying to run DFU, but my computer won't recognize the miniplayer. I am holding down the power button and M button while plugging it into the USB, but there is no "reaction" in my computer - nothing shows up. No new hardware wizard. Nothing. Please help.

    Thank you.

Yeah as lite has mentioned throughout the process you HAVE TO KEEP PRESSING AND HOLDING POWER and M. This should do the trick.
I had the same problem as you back then...then i started reading the forums -.-

I have held power and M for close to 3 minutes straight. While holding them both, I have plugged into each of the two USB ports - no reaction. While still holding power and M, I have started DFU - the only highlighted button is Close. I can keep following the above instructions, but lets assume I am doing everything correctly and nothing is happening - now what?

I have a similar problem. My player suddenly decided to stop responding on turn on (i think it actually ran out of juice). I tried all the recovery steps in FAQ, including DFU as the last resort... So what happens when I use DFU (with firmware 1.010):

    - I get the 'download' option
    - manifesting image 1 is done in a flash
    - when I get the status 'downloading image 1' it's infact 'manifesting image 2'
    - after that I hit the 'close' option
    - unplug the mini
    - press power/play... white screen flashes and...that's all folks

Any suggestions or can I donate my mini to the we-like-to-disassemble group of kids?

It's a pitty, 'cause I really enjoyed it and since I bought it when touring China it's of a sort of sentimental value to me.

    pls Help me

    Tnx

This is the same thing that I'm getting now. Press play, and NO MATTER WHAT IS DONE, the screen flashes white and then goes out, exactly as if I just turned it on, but does nothing. It slightly flashes off when I release the play button, so I know it's not STAYING on, either, unless I hold the play button.

I'm getting very pissed right now because I didn't spend $230 for something that would last 6 months! My PS2 has never had a problem and I've had it for 5 YEARS. (referring to the famous "disk read errors, etc. that PS2's had)

I only got it to FINISH downloading from DFU tools after disabling USB2 in my Bios, but it changed nothing! I OFTEN get errors that it seems google can only find some mexican website that even mentions it saying "Failed to communicate with DFU device!" over and over, along with some "Failed to recognize firmware revision!" errors, and one I didn't even see before I killed it, and just randomly actually finishes.

I do NOT want to lose $240 (aka, 6 full days of work, aka, for me, that's about 6 monhts of saving before I even make that much after bills and everything) for something that should just decide "oh, hey, I decided to turn off by myself after this song" via a BUG, and then die after playing and pausing a few times after turning it back on, with the only way to fix it being using something and being LUCKY enough to work (after the 20th try when your fingers are cramped), which only comes after resetting your PC about that many times because it won't stop telling you it failed to connect.

I'm sorry if I sound pissed, but I am. I'm really holding back just to type this as I'm shaking I'm so PO'd right now.... This isn't what I spent $240 for. My mp3 CD player from 5 years ago even lasted until it fell 8 feet onto a concrete floor, and even without a single bug or firmware update.

Can SOMEONE please help me (or rather, US), as searching 1 time every 60 seconds is not what I need to be doing when I'm already furious, and already spending over an hour doing that between retries on DFU.

If your unit was like mine (wouldnt turn on at all or make noise), here's what you have to do to get it working again.

    1. Press the Enter button for 15 seconds.
    2. Push and hold the Power/Play and M button. You will see a quick flash of the screen.
    3. Plug the usb cable into your unit as you are holding the two buttons down.
    4. Run DFU tools, and it should now pick up the unit. (Note, it may say "cannot detect DFU unit", just clock download until it works).
    5. Click Download, and the base resources will be back in the unit.

He meant to say "click", though in English slang, clocking something means to hit something, or something along the lines of that... so, hit "download" over and over until it works. It isn't working for me.

You don't need DFU Tools for Vista, as far as I've read. I think you just have to drag the M6.EBN file to it and then do the same thing as a normal firmware update when you put that file onto your M6.

LOOK AROUND before you do and read more because I don't know for sure, so don't just do exactly what I said there.

Goddam, I had a BIG problem with my M6, for the first time, tough. The thing that I tried was to downgrade it to S1.009. I got the file from Old Firmwares (I think it may be corrupted or something). Everything went fine, screen showed updating firmware... BUT then it died. Absolutely no response, no flash on the screen when pressing power or anything. Downloaded DFU tools and tried to make it work. No hope (that was because I first used S1.009 files) But then I got it back to life:

First copy FW S2.001.1 resource.bin and M6.ebn to DFU's directory (I tried the S1.009 first, but It didn't work).

    Start DFU Tools.

Hold "enter" for 15 seconds, then "power" and "M" buttons (screen flashes, when you press power).

Quickly plug in the USB cable. When DFU shows "download" click it. If it "cannot detect DFU unit", click again.

It might stuck and then you have to shutdown the program with ctrl+alt+del.

The "resurrection" is complete, when it downloads first and the it says "Enumerating...", click "close" and disconnect USB. And the "power" + "M" buttons have to be pressed all the way.

Then press power until your M6 starts, then it says "Formatting... Please Wait..." Wait until screen turns off, then re-power it, connect USB and make a normal upgrade procedure.

If you screw it up, just start by pressing "enter" 15 seconds and try again. I didn't count the times I tried it.

And I had to do the whole thing twice! :D That's because when I got it back to life, I tried FW S1.009 again. Bad mistake, it died same way like the first time. At first I tought that I did something wrong, but I didn't.

With all this crap about dfu needing to be on the player in order to load the firmware, how the hell did they get in on the player IN THE FIRST PLACE?

They had to be able to load a blank chip with DFU and firmware. They don't come with it magically on there already.
