    Hissing with EP630 M6 vs. M3 question

    Hi,

I have a Meizu M6 SP 8GB and Creative EP630 headphones and as mentioned several times in other threads I hear a lot of white noise which is not dependent on the volume. It is very apparent with quiet music and to me it is very annoying. I heard that some people say that the M3 has less hiss. Can anybody who's also annoyed by the M6 hiss confirm this? Is it just less or is it as good as on players like the Cowon D2? Because in this case I'd consider to sell my M6 and get an M3 instead...

    Thanks,

    Tobias

The M3 has less hiss, but what do you mean with "like the Cowon D2"?
Can't wait to play with the Meizu MX!

    Hi,

the only other player that I know apart from the M6 is the Cowon D2 and it has very little hiss. So I want to know if the M3 has as little hiss as the D2 or if it is somewhere in between the D2 and the M6.

What you said Tobias is very strange for me... I do have both player, M3 & M6, beside a Teclast C260 and another Rockchip device... I've never listen any hiss in any my Meizus, nor in the others.

I own a assorted set of earphones: Koss Sparkplug, a Cresyn LMX-E630, two Meizu PT850, Sony TMF-IF520R, Sennheiser 450, etc etc... I have tested all of them in my players... finally I am an audiophile... I would have noticed a failure like this you said, in a player that I am using every night before go to sleep.

My suggestion is to ask somebody else if they listen to that hiss you said in your M6, if this is so you must ask for a replacement of your player as it is malfunctioning.

No audio player of such quality can have a noticeable hiss which spoil your listening pleasure... that's nightmare!!!

Let us know how how your tests have gone.

    Hi,

thanks for your replies. I wouldn't call myself an audiophile. However my hearing is very good (I just took a hearing test and I can still hear the highest frequencies that you normally stop to hear at 25 or so). I have the hiss on my 8GB Meizu M6 as well as on a friends 2GB version. Both are SP. So I don't think it's a manufacturing problem. This friend of mine also hears it (and when I showed him the Cowon D2 in comparison he heard that it hisses less without me telling him to test it) although it doesn't bother him as much as me. I have the newest firmware and the hissing occurs like that:

    - I don't know if hiss is the right word. It sounds like white noise.
    - No hissing when Music is paused or volume is at 0 (I guess they turn off output in these cases)
    - Very apparent hiss, when I turn volume to 1 and music is still silent (by very apparent I don't mean as loud as normal music, but I hear it without having to concentrate on it). Volume of the hiss stays the same with louder player volume so I guess it's really electrical or something.
    - Very apparent with EP630 canalphones. Less apparent with Meizu earphones. Not very apparent with big Sony headphones (for which I have to crank up the volume to full volume).

Since I hear it on two players and since other people here have it, too, I doubt that I will get a refund. Either you are happy to have a player without this fault, or it's just that I have the curse that my hearing is still slightly better and that makes the difference.

    What about Tinnitus? :D

Anyway... did you take off Spatializer? or Treble Boost...

It can be that you have a better perception of high frequency, I mean above normal human being which is about 15000 hz above, but that could have make you listen the hiss of a normal cd in a normal HiFi equipment. Is that so?

lol, tinnitus is a ringing noise, its got hardly anything to do with white noise, which isnt a ringing noise but a constant SSSSSSSSSSS :D

    Hi,

well, and tinnitus wouldn't explain why I don't hear it when I hit pause or in the split second between the songs. I also don't hear that noise when listening to CDs from my HIFI with headphones. Mind you, it is not loud or anything. It doesn't bother me when listening to Pop or Rock but once I listen to classical music or songwriter music that has really quiet parts and I'm also in a place where there is not much noise around me it is annoying (I don't recognize it when I drive in a train or something without concentrating on it).

Anyway, I think my Miniplayer starts to punish me for talking badly about it. Yesterday after unplugging it from the PC it wouldn't respond to anything anymore. No clicking noise came from it and resetting didn't work. I was already preparing for sending it in. Then this morning I pressed a random key combination again and suddenly the power button turned it on again. VERY strange.

Oh and I have spatializer and treble boost turned off.

I just ordered an M3. It will arrive next week. If it sounds better I will sell the M6. Otherwise I might send the M3 back. But I hope it will just sound better.

i have ep630s too, and i hear the hissing too...but if the music is loud is doesn't bother me at all, just at low volume. that's the reason i want to sell my m6 and purchase a new m6sl, because i hope the new audio chip is better

Blackstar... Tinnitus has several forms, among them ringing noise but also white noise, pink noise, ringing, hammering, rumbling, etc. etc.

I thought tinnitus was usually a ringing noise, whilst there may be cases of humming or buzzing.

White noise is generally the therapeutic treatment for tinnitus, so I am reluctant to see how your ear can generate white or pink noise lol. Anyhow, if you aint hearing white noise until you press play on your miniplayer, I can be pretty certain that its got nothing to do with tinnitus.

As a sufferer of Tinnitus its symptoms are constant and can't be hidden or overridden regardless of volume, settings, or any other external sound. If anything it may hinder ones ability to notice any audible hiss should it be present.

indeed. i think i'm on the verge of getting mild tinnitus (i have ringing in my ears for 10 seconds sometimes then it goes away ). I wonder if tinnitus is really ear damage or if its just caused by stress, damn uni!

I think I know what you're talking about therobbot. I can also hear a hissing noise on my m6 but only when the volume is quite low, say under level 5. I have turned off the spatializer and all of the sound effects. Maybe I can hear it because I'm still young? Oh well, I never listen to it that low anyway.

Well, with the EP630 I listen at volume 12-13 when I'm at home. I also begin to think it has to do with how good your hearing still is because I can't really imagine that the players are so different. I already thought of a test by generating a file with white noise and then let people say at which volume they begin to recognize it with the Meizu headphones. If somebody recognizes it at the same volume as I do but doesn't recognize the background noise there should really be a difference between the players (that's my inner scientist coming through ). But I'll wait with this until I tested the M3 and can say if it is different for me there.

Funny thing is that even at volume 1 I hear it more with quiet music than with busy music but I'm not sure if this is selective hearing or if there's really an electronic difference for the DAC. Anyway it is only noticable with quiet music but I listen to classical and singer/songwriter a lot and there it is just annoying.

aside from the fact that i would not consider any of those headphones near audiophile quality, the source of the problem is hardware and producing a clean signal. this would only be picked up with headphones with very high sensitivity (phones that you listen to the player at a volume of < 5) ie IEMs. my shure e4c had a lot of hiss, i typically listened at 4, at night 1~2, and the hiss is quite noticible. my e500's are even worse, i listen at 2, and havnt tried them at night. the hiss is more pronounced.

my old MX500's have no hiss, ex-90 none, KSC-75 none, etc. look up the sensitivity ratings of your phones.

yes, no audio player of such quality would have noticeable hiss, but meizu m6's definitely do. what does this say about the meizu?

i am hoping that the new m6 SL will have less hiss, as i have heard the m3 does. if not, i will probably replace my m6

this is because with quiet music there is less signal being transmitted, thus the signal compared to the noise would not be as great. your ears will adapt to the more quiet parts and the noise will become relatively louder.

You mean that you know Sennheiser 450... a very old professional headphone?... and it's not near audiophile quality!!! ... :D:D:D:D:D

Do you know too Cresyn LMX-E630?...

What are for you audiophile quality ear(head)phones?
